Biographical history

Peter J.M. Lown was born May 29, 1947 in Bolton, Lancashire, England. Lown completed a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), Honours at the University of Glasgow in 1968. In 1969, Lown joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta in 1969. At the same time, he completed his Masters of Laws (LL.M) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1973. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1973 and appointed Queen's Counsel in 1994. Lown practiced in the area of Family, Conflicts, Corporate and Intellectual Property Law. Additionally, Lown specialized in and taught on topics such as Intellectual Property, Communications Law and Entertainment Law. In 2016, Lown became the Principal Consultant for Peter JM Lown Professional Corporation on legal reform to the Uniform Law Commission.

In addition to Lown’s academic contributions during his time at the University of Alberta, Lown has served in many external positions. From 1983 to 1985, Lown served as the Executive Director of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice. From 1990 to 1992, he was Chairman of the Uniform Law Section of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada. And, from 1993 to 1995, Lown was the President of the Uniform Law Conference of Canada. Lown also served as Chair of the Uniform Law Conference Advisory Committee on Project Development and Management, Director and Treasurer of the Federation of Law Reform Agencies of Canada, Treasurer of the Commonwealth Association of Law Reform Agencies, and Director of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice, and Director of the Alberta Law Reform Institute from 1988 to 2015. As part of these positions, Lown has served as a champion of law reform. Lown has participated in working groups for a number of Uniform Law Conference of Canada projects, including projects related to Enforcement of Judgments, Choice of Law in Consumer Contracts, National Class Actions, Limitations, Privity of Contract, and Trust Law Reform.

Lown has published extensively in the Communications and Corporate areas. Some publications include the Alberta Chapter of Matrimonial Property Law in Canada; editor of CCH Corporations Law Guide; and Canadian Encyclopedia entries on trademarks, law reform, intellectual property, and patents.

In addition to Lown’s academic and professional contributions, Lown participated in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, representing Canada in field hockey. He has also participated for Canada in the Pan American Games and volunteered in the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988.
