Biographical history

The Scandinavian Studies Association (SSA) was organized on January 23, 1990 and was incorporated on May 11, 1990 as a non-profit society at the University of Alberta. It was organized by a group of community-minded Albertans, many of Scandinavian heritage, who wanted to secure a second faculty position in the Scandinavian Studies program at the university. The mandate of the organization was to promote the study of Scandinavian culture and to maintain and enhance the identity of Scandinavian-Canadians.

The Association’s focus has been on achieving those objectives by offering moral and financial support to the University of Alberta’s Scandinavian Program. The Association has worked closely with the university and its Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Association volunteers have been involved in numerous efforts, including a variety of fundraising initiatives, which led to substantive growth of the Scandinavian Professorship Endowment Fund (SPEF). From modest beginnings, SPEF’s value reached more than $3 million by 2018. Contributions came from individuals, governments, organizations and businesses, as well as through casinos and other SSA fundraisers.

Proceeds from this endowed fund significantly contributed toward the financial support of Scandinavian Studies faculty. A contribution toward SPEF came through a major personal donation by Mrs. Linnea Lodge, a member of Edmonton’s Swedish community and founding SSA member. It led to establishment of the Henry Cabot Lodge and Linnea Lodge Scandinavian Professorship in 2007.
