Biographical history

Eva K. Neumaier was born in Germany and earned a PhD (Dr. Phil. Habil.) from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In the 1980s, she immigrated to Canada to work as a professor at the University of Calgary. She also worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In 1991, Neumaier became a professor at the University of Alberta. She was a professor in the Department of Religious Studies and the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Studies (which became the Department of Comparative Literature, Religion and Film/Media Studies), as well as the Department of East Asian Studies. Neumaier was appointed the Chair of the Department of Religious Studies when she first joined the U of A in 1991, with the goal of expanding the department and developing graduate programs. She was also the Chair of the Department of East Asian Studies in about 1999-2003. In 2003, she retired and earned the title of professor emeritus.

Neumaier has published articles about Buddhism and other topics in Eastern religion. Outside of her academic career, Neumaier is an artist who works in watercolour. She currently lives in Calgary.
