Administrative history

The Breton Plots History Research Project was undertaken in 2005 as a project to research and document the Breton Plots through oral history interviews and compilation of research materials. The project was funded in part by the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation.

The Breton Plots is a research facility managed by the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta (U of A). The first plots, known as the Classical Plots, were established in 1929 near the village of Breton, Alberta by the former U of A Department of Soils. The Hendrigan Plots were established in 1980 and named after local farmer Lou Hendrigan. The research plots were designed to conduct long-term agricultural soil experiments on Gray Luvisolic soils, which are located at the transition from the aspen parkland to the boreal forest. The Breton Plots are an Alberta Registered Historic Resource.
