Biographical history

Alastair Small was a Professor of Classics at the University of Alberta until his retirement in 1998. Today, he is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Alberta and an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh.

Alastair is married to Carola, previously a Professor of Medieval History, and now an Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and Professor Emerita of the University of Alberta. Since the 1960s, Alastair and Carola have been investigating the archaeology of Apulia, a region in southeast Italy, with a focus on excavating a Roman rural settlement at Vagnari.

Alastair Small has contributed to numerous papers and publications including editor of “Subject and Ruler : The Cult of the Ruling Power in Classical Antiquity: Papers Presented at a Conference Held in the University of Alberta on April13-15, 1994, to Celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Duncan Fishwick”, editor of “The Excavations of San Giovanni Di Ruoti: The small finds” (1997) and “Beyond Vagnari: New themes in the Study of Roman South Italy” (2014).
