Biographical history

Dr. David Archibad Boad was born on January 24, 1934 in Edmonton, Alberta was raised on the Boag Homestead near Bremner, Alberta. He and his family moved to Victoria, British Columbia when he was 14 years old. He returned to Alberta to study at the University of Alberta (U of A). Boag completed his PhD from Washington State University in 1961, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station in Naples, Italy.

Dr. Boag joined the U of A in 1963 to teach at the Department of Zoology. He worked at the U of A until his retirement in June 1991. Boag’s research focused on the ecology of grouse in Canada and Scotland. His research also included jellyfish and lizards in Italy and land pond snails, magpies, ground squirrels, and raptors in Canada. Dr. Boag was also the director of RB Miller (now Kananaskis) Biological Research Station west of Turner Valley, Alberta for 20 years. Following his retirement he moved to Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, where he lived until 2012.

He met Maria Sofia (nee Giaquinto) when he pursued his post-doc in Naples, Italy, who later became his wife. They have a son Tom, and four daughters: Franca, Nicola, Samantha and Tala. Dr. Boag died on December 6, 2017 at the age of 83 years in Calgary, Alberta.
