Histoire administrative

The Beginning of Print Culture in Athabasca Country is a facsimile edition and translation of a Prayer Book in Cree Syllabics originally prepared by Father Émile Grouard, OMI, and printed in Lac La Biche, Alberta in 1883. Father Grouard's prayer book marked the move from oral to print culture for the Cree.

More than a century later, Patricia Demers, Naomi McIlwraith, and Dorothy Thunder reproduced the text, and included a direct English translation as well as a transliteration into the Standard Roman Orthography. The introduction to the work, written by Demers, sets it within its cultural framework. The translators also discuss Grouard's use of Cree Syllabics, illuminating the difficulties faced by Grouard as a missionary-pioneer in transferring the nuances of one language to another.
