General context
John Strachan was the first Bishop of Toronto, serving from 1839 until his death in 1867. Born in 1778 at Aberdeen, Scotland, Strachan arrived in Upper Canada in 1799. Ordained by the Church of England in 1804, Reverend Strachan moved to York (modern-day Toronto) in 1812. A major figure in the society of Upper Canada, and a staunch British patriot, Reverend Strachan stirred much controversy with his personality, methods, and beliefs. He was instrumental in founding the University of Trinity College in Toronto. Upon being consecrated as Bishop of Toronto in 1839, Strachan adopted the signature "John Toronto."
