Biographical history

Donald B. Smith, professeur d'histoire du Canada à l'Université de Calgary, a préparé un article sur l'histoire de la Francophonie albertaine pour un collectif sur les groupes ethniques de l'Alberta publié sous la direction d'Howard Palmer Peoples of Alberta. L'article est d'abord paru en français dans le Bulletin du centre d'études franco-canadiennes de l'Ouest.

Donald B. Smith was a Canadian history professor at the University of Calgary, who prepared an article on the history of Franco-Albertans for a collective on the ethnic groupsof Alberta published under the direction of the Howard Palmer Peoples of Alberta. The articles first appeared in French in the Bulletin du centre d’études franco-canadiens de l’Ouest.

Cet accession fut acquis par les Archives de l'Université de l'Alberta (UAA) de la part des Archives Saint-Jean, anciennement situé au Campus Saint-Jean de l'Université de l'Alberta. Le but principal des Archives Saint-Jean était de préserver le matériel archivistique qui avait déjà été acquis au fil des ans par l'ancien IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) et ensuite par l’ancien IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).

This accession was acquired by the University of Alberta Archives in 2019 from the Archives Saint-Jean that was previously housed at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean. The Archives Saint-Jean’s main goal was to preserve archival materials that had already been acquired by the IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) and subsequently by IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).

Scope and content

L'accession contient la documentation recueillie pour l'article et par la suite de celui-ci (entre 1979 et 1986). Il comprend quelques originaux de lettres envoyées au professeur Smith, des coupures de presse de textes inédits et tirées de divers journaux et, surtout, des photocopies d'articles de périodiques et de journaux relatifs à la francophonie albertaine.

Accession contains documentation collected for the purpose of the article and more (between 1979 and 1986). It contains a few original letters sent to professor Smith, clippings of unedited texts taken from various journals and, mostly, photocopies of articles from periodicals and journals related to Franco-Albertans.
