Biographical history
Pierre-Yves Mocquais was born in France in 1951. He studied modern literature at l'Université de Franche-Comté, earning bachelor's and master's degrees. He moved to Canada in the 1970s to study at the University of Western Ontario, where he completed a doctorate in French-Canadian literature in 1985. He also taught Québécois literature at the University of Regina beginning in 1978, becoming a professor there in 1995. Mocquais was a professor of French language literature the University of Calgary beginning in 1999, acting as the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities in 1999-2004. At the University of Calgary, he helped establish the Language Research Centre and the Canada Research Chair in Applied Linguistics. Mocquais moved to the University of Alberta in 2014, acting as Dean of the Faculté Saint-Jean from 2014-2022. He retired in 2022.
Mocquais is a well-respected researcher in French Canadian literature and culture. Mocquais's research has included Hubert Aquin, francophones in Western Canada, and the theme of exile. He founded the Centre d’études sur le Canada français et la francophonie in 1995 and was its director until 2000. Mocquais became a Knight of France’s Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 2005, then an Officer in 2014 for his promotion of French culture.

Fonds consists of the records of Pierre-Yves Mocquais, related to his academic career at the University of Regina, the University of Calgary, and Faculté Saint-Jean. The fonds also contains: research files about Hubert Aquin, other French-Canadian authors, and francophone culture; manuscripts and other records related to the publication of a critical edition of "Neige Noire" by Édition critique de l'Oeuvre d'Hubert Aquin (EDAQ); course outlines and notes from courses taught by Mocquais; conference files; theses, essays, and articles written by Mocquais; records related to Mocquais's academic work as a student; and other related records.
