Biographical history

Autres oeuvres inclus: "Alberta Francophonie and Inclusion of Newcomers: Postmortem to a Debate on a Name Change"; "'Congolity' and identity building in Congolese media discourse"; et "Edmonton Area Francophone African Christian Churches and the Social and Individual integration of Newcomers”.

Paul Dubé is a Francophone Albertan from Edmonton. Currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint Jean, Paul Dubé has made an impact in the francophone community.
Dube was one of three parents who, dissatisfied with the quality of French language education in Alberta, submitted a proposal to the Minister of Education in 1982 supporting an autonomous French school board. Following the dismissal of the proposal by the Minister of Education, and the local school board’s lack of support, Paul Dube, Jean-Claude Mahe, and Angeline Martel brought the case to court in 1990. They argued that the government was violating their right to a Francophone-run education system under section 23 of the Charter. The court found that the Charter guaranteed the right to representation on the school board and exclusive control over children’s education, or a separate board as the population of the area dictates. The court ruled that in this case, a separate board was not required; however, there must be representation on the current board. This marked a monumental decision that would have lasting impacts in many of the provinces.
As a professor, Dube has also made significant contributions to his field. He is co-author of the Dictionary of Francophone Artists and Authors of Western Canada; he has co-edited four volumes devoted to the Western Canadian Francophonie (ACTS of CEFCO) and published around 75 articles in this research area. Other works include: "Alberta Francophonie and Inclusion of Newcomers: Postmortem to a Debate on a Name Change"; "'Congolity' and identity building in Congolese media discourse"; and "Edmonton Area Francophone African Christian Churches and the Social and Individual integration of Newcomers”. Other research interests include the issue of the inclusion of immigrants in the context of French-speaking communities, the concepts of interculturality and transculturality, phenomenology, the media, and immigration.

Custodial history

This fonds was acquired by the University of Alberta Archives in 2019 from the Archives Saint-Jean that was previously housed at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean.
