General context
Born in Middlesex County, Ontario, Thomas Alfred "Alf" Patrick became engaged to Marion Griffith of Byron, ON in 1885. Patrick graduated from Western University medical program in 1888. He was lured west and in 1889 set up his practice in Saltcoats (now in Saskatchewan). He and Marion finally married in March 1890, and they eventually had four children. They moved to Yorkton in 1894. Dr. Patrick was not only a prairie doctor, but he also represented the Yorkton constituency in the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories between 1898 and 1904. He is credited with being the first person to suggest that the N.W.T. be split into two provinces along a north-south boundary, rather than the one province solution being suggested by Premier Frederick Haultain. Dr. Patrick's suggestion was implemented in 1905 with the creation of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Dr. Patrick died in 1943. He is buried in Yorkton Cemetery.
