A Wesleyan Methodist missionary, the Reverend William Mason arrived in Rupert's Land to serve at Lac la Pluie in May 1840. He married the daughter of Hudson's Bay Company employee Thomas Thomas, Sophia Thomas of Red River, in 1843. The couple were sent to assist the Reverend James Evans at Norway House and the nearby Rossville mission. Rev. Mason presided over the trial of Rev. Evans when accusations of sexual misconduct were leveled at the latter. Upon Rev. Evans' removal, Rev. Mason took charge of the mission and Evans' project of translating and printing the Bible in Cree. In 1854 Rev. Mason left the Wesleyan Methodist Church and joined the Church of England, moving to York Factory and serving there for two periods: 1854-1858 and 1862-1870.

Owing to the translation skills of Sophia, the Masons were able to travel to England from 1858 to 1862 and see both the Old and New Testaments printed in Cree by 1861. Sophia died shortly thereafter. Rev. Mason retired to England in 1875.
