Jean-Louis Lebel est né en 1918 à Longueuil, Quebec. En 1919, ça famille a déménagé à Saint-Paul, Alberta. Lebel a obtenu un baccalauréat en Arts à l'Université Laval en 1940 et un baccalauréat en Droit à l'Université de l'Alberta en 1943. Il a également suivi des études avancées dans le domaine des affaires à Harvard School of Business Administration et à l'Université Stanford.
Durant ses études à l'université, il a rencontré son épouse Thérèse Lebel.
Lebel est le président fondateur de la Société franco-canadienne de Calgary. Il a également siégé au Conseil d'administration du Conseil canadien du développement social. En 1974, il est devenu membre du Sénat de l'Université de Calgary et en 1978, il a été elu Chancelier de la même université pour un term de quatre ans. Lebel a aussi été le directeur de plusieurs entreprises pétrolières. En 1979, on l'a nommé conseiller de la Reine.
Un prix a été nommé en son honneur, le Prix d'excellence Jean-Louis Lebel, qui est attribué chaque année à un juriste qui fait preuve d'un dévouement exceptionnel à l'avancement de la francophonie en Alberta. Le prix est attribué par l'Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Alberta (AJEFA).
Jean-Louis Lebel was born in 1918 in Longueuil, Quebec. In 1919 his family moved to Saint-Paul, Alberta. Lebel earned a Bachelor of Arts from Laval University in 1940 and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Alberta in 1943. He also completed advanced business studies at Harvard School of Business Administration and Stanford University.
During his time at university he met his wife Thérèse Lebel.
Lebel was the founding President of the French Canadian Society of Calgary, as well as on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council on Social Development. In 1974 he became a member of the Senate of the University of Calgary and in 1978 he was appointed Chancellor for a four year term ending in 1982. During his time as Chancellor he gave two of his daughter's their degrees from the University of Calgary.
Lebel was also on the board of directors for multiple oil companies and took part in many community projects. In 1979, he was also named counsellor to the Queen.
An award was named in his honour, the Jean-Louis Lebel Award of Excellence, which is awarded each year to a lawyer who demonstrates dedication to the advancement of the Francophonie in Alberta. This award is given by the Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Alberta (AJEFA).
Custodial history
Ce fonds fut acquis par les Archives de l'Université de l'Alberta (UAA) de la part des Archives Saint-Jean, anciennement situé au Campus Saint-Jean de l'Université de l'Alberta. Le but principal des Archives Saint-Jean était de préserver le matériel archivistique qui avait déjà été acquis au fil des ans par l'ancien IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) et ensuite par l’ancien IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).
This fonds was acquired by the University of Alberta Archives in 2019 from the Archives Saint-Jean that was previously housed at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean. The Archives Saint-Jean’s main goal was to preserve archival materials that had already been acquired by the IRFOC (Institut de recherche francophone de l’ouest canadien) and subsequently by IPFOC (Institut pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l’ouest canadien).
