Purchased by the University of Alberta in 1942 from Mr. J. W. Bown. The collection was formed by J. J. Birch.

The Joseph J. Birch collection is housed in various locations: the majority of the collection is stored in the University of Alberta’s Research and Collections Resource Facility (RCRF), some volumes are on the shelf in Rutherford Library, and there are a few volumes in Bruce Peel Special Collections.

Restrictions on access
The volumes housed in RCRF and Rutherford library are available to be checked out to those who have access to the University of Alberta’s library system, while items in the Bruce Peel Special Collections are available for use by students, staff, and the general public in the library’s supervised reading room upon presentation of valid photo identification (e.g., ONEcard, driver’s license, passport, or citizenship card with photo).
