David McKnight fonds
PS 8237 M6 D38 · Archief · [197-]-2012

Fonds consist of David McKnight’s Canadian Little Magazine and Small Press archive, reflecting his interest in documenting the history of this genre of Canadian publishing, and include the pioneering work in the field done by Wynne Francis whose research files form part of the fonds. Through both of their collecting, the David McKnight fonds consists of materials which cover the history of Canadian small press publishing from 1923-2010.

The designation of the series was arrived at after considering the ordering of the material as it was received at Bruce Peel Special Collections. It was clear that there was an original ordering of the files, often according to an alphabetical or chronological scheme, and the files had titles. David McKnight separated his files broadly into those associated with his mentor and advisor, Wynne Francis, and his own research/collection files, and as much as possible, this structure is maintained. Series titles were arrived at after considering the collection in its entirety, and the apparent order implied by McKnight’s file listings and comments. The material was received in two shipments, but was intended as one donation, so some assignment of series and file titles, combining the material in the two shipments, was necessary. The records are almost all textual, although there are three microfilm reels, two cassette tapes, and two photographs.

Taking into consideration both the information provided by David McKnight in a letter to the Head of Bruce Peel Special Collections, and the contents of the records received, six series and several sub-series were established to better facilitate access to the collection.

UAA Fonds 0410 · Archief · 1928-2012

The Human Rights Institute of Canada fonds contains the records of the Human Rights Institute of Canada and its founder and president, Marguerite Ritchie. The Human Rights Institute of Canada is an independent, not for profit, non-partisan research group which conducts and promotes research into issues that impede equality for Canadians, as per the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with a specific focus on women’s equality. This Institute was founded by Ottawa based lawyer, Marguerite Ritchie, a former lawyer for the Department of Justice and Vice-Chair of the Anti-Dumping Tribunal. The fundamental premise of the Institute was to provide expert legal research to the Canadian people in the same way that the Department of Justice gives legal advice to the Government of Canada. As founder and President, Marguerite Ritchie set the tone for the Institute and this fonds also contains her papers from before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada.

The materials in this fonds date from 1934 to 2013. Materials from the Human Rights Institute of Canada are from 1973 to 2013, while legal research materials date back to the 1700s. The fonds pertains predominately to Canada, with some research on the United States of America (USA), Europe, the Soviet Union (USSR), the Middle East, and Africa. With the exception of United Nations conferences and research on Israel, most of the research on other nations and regions is for a point of comparison for rights, equality, and politics.

The fonds contains three types of materials: those of Marguerite Ritchie from her personal life and career before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada, those relating to the functioning of the institute, such as administrative records, and those relating to the work of the Institute produced mainly by President Marguerite Ritchie. Documents from the work of the Human Rights Institute of Canada is the largest portion of the fonds. Materials produced by the Institute were generated mostly by the projects it was involved with, including tracking issues over the course of years and its efforts to publicise its research in the media and the government. This fonds does not contain working papers of volunteers. Function based Institute records document the Human Rights Institute of Canada’s founding, its procedures, funding, support, and organisation. Materials of founder Marguerite Ritchie contain research from her work at the Department of Justice and the Anti-Dumping Tribunal, Anti-Dumping Tribunal procedures, her personal experiences facing sexism and gender discrimination while working for the federal government. It also includes her personal research on women’s issues which she began while working for the Department of Justice and which became a life-long passion.

The Human Rights Institute of Canada addresses issues of women’s equality, human rights, the United Nations and international law, Canadian laws and equality, the functioning of government, equality in the justice system, the relationship between the federal governments and the provinces, and funding and support for the Institute. Major projects the Institute worked on to address these issues include Persons Case II, Senate reform, the Meech Lake Accord and Charlottetown Accord, status equality for aboriginal women, the Expropriation of Nanoose Bay, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the high arctic relocations, the Royal Commission on the Status of Women and following the development of the status of women, Quebec separatism, and the Official Languages Act and bilingualism. The most common document types are newspaper clippings, memorandum, correspondence, press releases, reports, legislation, House of Commons and Senate debates, committee minutes and proceedings from Parliament, promotional materials, and government publications. Newspaper clippings are mostly annotated with citations and marginalia. The fonds also contains a significant number of Dialogue magazines; Marguerite Ritchie was a long time contributor to this magazine, which publishes reader contributed articles on political and social issues from a variety of perspectives.

Studio Theatre fonds
UAA Fonds 0426 · Archief · 1949-2009

The records in the Studio Theatre fonds span a period of more than forty years. They offer record of a long-standing and innovative working theatre deeply involved in the Edmonton arts community, as well as documenting an important component of the University of Alberta's drama department program. Studio Theatre has contributed immensely to the development of theatre in Alberta and Canada, as witnessed by the number of individuals working in theatre across the country who have participated and gained experience on the Studio Theatre stage.

The records have been arranged and described in six series, with a basic chronological order maintained within each series. There is information about almost every play produced on the Studio Theatre stage between 1949 and 1991. Information tends to be fairly skimpy for the earlier productions; a production file might only contain a program and review clipping. As the years progress, more and more information is included with the production file. Reports from technical crew heads, front of house reports, financial records and publicity clippings are routinely kept. The production books, described in Series III, often provide the most detailed and varied information about a production. These books are production scrapbooks, and include programs, reports, clippings, telegrams, related correspondence, photographs, set plans, cast lists, and much more. Almost all of the production books have a copy of the script, used by the director as a prompt script and annotated with movement blocking, directions, and notes. In some production books, the director has included a written commentary critiquing various aspects of the production; theme may also be discussed, and background research notes about the play and playwright included.

With over 4000 photographic images (prints, negatives, and contacts) represented in the fonds, it is possible to get a 'visual' sense of the productions. Many productions are represented by both 'official' and 'candid' shots, and there are views of actors, sets, and costumes. The photographs vary in quality of picture as well as physical condition of print. Also documented in the Studio Theatre records are production posters, costume designs and set plans. Again, a researcher may have to consult the production book (Series III) as well as the specific media listing (Series IV) to see all available documents in these areas.

Not represented very extensively in these records is administrative documentation; a researcher interested in Studio Theatre administration should consult the general drama department records. The administrative records that are available in this fond consist of the correspondence files described in Series I. Torches Theatre records are also fairly sketchy, consisting of production books for the years 1962-1969.

The Studio Theatre records are a valuable contribution to theatre history documentation at the University of Alberta, and the City of Edmonton. They provide a glimpse of the people involved in drama during a formative time for theatre development in Edmonton. Social history is revealed through the plays chosen for production at Studio Theatre, mirroring the issues and trends in the wider society. Classical and contemporary plays, some experimental and others quite traditional, are all a part of Studio Theatre's production legacy.

The records have been arranged and described as six series, and a detailed series and file list follows. A brief description is provided of each series, followed by the file listing. A production index is found at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

Because the Studio Theatre records were received at the Archives as several deposits over a period of years, there was a need to bring the records together intellectually to better aid researchers looking for as complete a picture as possible. A basic chronological arrangement was maintained, with series arrangements assigned by the archivist to reflect function and format of the records.

The records are in good physical shape. The bound production books tend to be somewhat fragile and archivally compromised because of their 'scrapbook' quality. The paper in the books is very acidic, and items have often been attached with glue and scotch tape. Newspaper clippings are taped beside photographs, and oversize plans folded to fit the books. The binding of the production books is good, however, and no attempt was made to remove affixed items from the books. The pages with attached photographs were interleaved with acid-free tissue paper. In the production show files, newspaper clippings were photocopied and originals removed, and photographs were separated from the textual file for separate storage and description. The photographs vary in quality, and physical shape and it is obvious that they were handled a lot in the course of choosing publicity shots, etc. Contact prints and 35mm negatives are available for many of the productions. Where possible, oversize items have been flattened and stored separately.

Byron Kratchovil fonds
UAA Fonds 0311 · Archief · 1997 - 2004

The Byron Kratochvil fonds documents the professional career of an important teacher, researcher, writer and administrator who was associated with the University of Alberta for over thirty years. Dr. Kratochvil attained recognition as a respected analytical chemist, and served the University of Alberta as a professor of Chemistry, chairman of the Department of Chemistry, and as an administrator in his role as Associate Vice-President (Research). The records, largely textual, document Byron Kratochvil’s career at the University of Alberta, but also touch upon his earlier teaching experiences and research interests. The records provide a significant documentation of Kratochvil’s teaching career, with several files of lecture notes, student examinations and projects, and class records. Also strongly represented in the fonds, are the records generated from the textbooks written by Kratochvil and W.E. Harris and originally computer-published by the University of Alberta. Various drafts of the textbooks are retained in the records, complete with numerous annotations, inserts, corrections and research notes. There are fairly complete files of Chemistry Department-related records in the Kratochvil fonds, which include meeting minutes, internal memorandum, and committee reports retained on an annual basis. Byron Kratochvil was chair of the Department of Chemistry from 1989-1995, so the Department material for these years provides insight into the role of the Chairman, and the relationship the Department had with the larger Faculty of Science it reported to. Included also are the documents generated by the various University committees and research groups Professor Kratochvil sat on; of particular note are detailed files related to the Environmental Research and Studies Centre. A smaller series contains records generated during Byron Kratochvil’s time as Associate Vice-President (Research). A comprehensive set of Byron Kratochvil’s professional correspondence forms one series, and provides a record of his written communication with colleagues, graduate students, and scientific associations, relating to his research and various other issues. Among Kratochvil’s research interest topics are those in the area of the theory and application of sampling for chemical analysis; the measurement of free metal ion concentrations in solution; and the development of new analytical reagents and methods in nonacqueous solvents. Two smaller series contain documents linked to professional associations Professor Kratochvil supported, with textual and photographs items documenting scientific conferences and workshops he attended; as well as consulting work undertaken. The final series in this finding-aid consists of material designated as ‘personal’, although still very related to the series that precede it. Included here are copies of personnel documents related to salary and promotions, copies of CV’s and biographies as well as day planners and collected archives. The records are in excellent physical shape and because of their completeness and the broad span of years represented, provide valuable insight into one man’s career at the University of Alberta..

Peter Lougheed fonds
UAA Fonds 0420 · Archief · Predominantly 1965-2004

Peter Lougheed is a former premier of Alberta (1971-1985) who was in charge of the Progressive Conservative government in the province during an era of significant development for Alberta in relation to the energy sectors and provincial contribution to the national scene. Peter Lougheed was born in Calgary on July 26, 1928, son of Edgar and Edna Lougheed and grandson of Sir James Alexander Lougheed. He was educated in Calgary public schools, was awarded a BA. and LLB. from the University of Alberta in 1951 and 1952 respectively, and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1954, Lougheed was elected leader of a moribund Progressive Conservative party in Alberta in 1965, and went on to win a seat in the legislature in 1967, and to become premier at the head of a new Progressive Conservative government in 1971 He was premier of the province through tumultuous years of boom and bust, the development of the energy industry, and federal-provincial conflicts. Lougheed retired from politics in 1985 after winning four successive election victories. Since leaving politics, Lougheed has been partner and counsel with Bennett Jones law firm in Calgary, active in international business pursuits, and much involved in national issues of trade and constitutional reform. Today Lougheed makes his home in Calgary. He continues to be involved in business pursuits, actively supports various organizations, and speaks out on matters of public concern. For a more complete biography see archivist’s file.
These records were in Lougheed’s custody in various locations over the years. Some of the early scrapbooks and other material in the fonds was originally assembled outside Lougheed’s office and without his direction by other interested parties and given to Lougheed as part of his memorabilia collection. Originally, prior to 1971, items collected seem to have been kept in P. C. party or Official Opposition offices, but during Lougheed’s long term as premier, they were kept in his Calgary premier’s office, and after he left public office, in his law office at Bennett Jones. They were later stored at the Ranchmen’s Club and were transferred to the Lougheed House archives in 2004.
The fonds consists of quasi-personal material collected by Lougheed during the course of his political and post-political career, along with a few pertinent items saved from his pre-political life. This is essentially a collection of items chosen by Peter Lougheed (or, in the case of newsclippings, but staff under his direction) to document that part of his life which has been in the public eye since 1965, and to showcase aspects of those public achievements which gave him particular personal satisfaction, or were simply fun, In the manner of a scrapbook, this collection was always intended as a display.
The collection documents, from Lougheed’s personal point of view and from that of the mass media, his career in Progressive Conservative party politics and campaigns throughout his tenure as premier, his official activities while in public office as leader of the opposition and premier, and his ongoing service to the community and the nation since 1985.

Mel Hurtig fonds
UAA Fonds 0612 · Archief · 2004

The Mel Hurtig fonds encompass a wide range of records, documenting the many areas of interest and pursuits Mr. Hurtig enjoyed in the professional, personal and political arenas of his life. In the first series, Hurtig Business Records, only a few files concern Hurtig’s Bookstore; most of the files relate instead to his publishing concerns. The series includes correspondence with authors and a series of files Hurtig called “Possible Future Books”, where book proposals and potential publishing projects were considered. The correspondence with authors is very interesting and the Hurtig Business records series provides the researcher with some sense of the complexity involved in the publishing world. There is extensive business correspondence files located in Series 1 and they have been arranged in date order by day, month and year. It is perhaps a misnomer to label Hurtig’s correspondence as business or personal or CIC/COC etc., because such tidy separations do not actually exist in his correspondence. All these ‘boundaries’ blend together. His letters to authors, for example, often contain information related to his CIC and COC initiatives, and the hundreds of invitations he receives for speaking engagements invite him to speak on topics encompassing his many interests and expertise. In the end, the letter-head the letters were sent on determined what series the correspondence was filed with; the letters located in this series were written on various Hurtig business logo stationery. The CIC and COC correspondence are likewise filed because of the letter-head or titles typed on the retained flimsy file copies. In more recent dates, the correspondence often consists of printed e-mails, again on numerous issues and topics, but is filed in the ‘Personal Records’ series because of when they were written in relation to Mel Hurtig’s stage of life and career. Separate finding-aids are available to the records of The Canadian Encyclopedia and The Junior Encyclopedia of Canada Mel Hurtig’s involvement with the Committee for an Independent Canada and with the Council of Canadians is well-documented in Series 2 and Series 3 of the fonds, particularly in regard to the issues both groups were involved with. Hurtig was a central figure in both organizations, and his correspondence files provide a valuable record of the day-to-day operations of these national bodies, as well as a more global view of the organizations and the public personas they presented. There are copies of board meeting documents and executive correspondence, as well as policy documentation, issue-oriented presentations, news releases and related clipping files. A major issue the COC, in particular, rallied against was the Free Trade Agreement and there is an extensive collection of research material and documents gathered for background reference and research purposes. The COC corresponded with federal politicians, well-known Canadians, and other action bodies (such as the Pro-Canada Network) in assembling their issues information library, as evidenced in the Series 3 files. Peace and disarmament issues are also extensively documented in the COC files. Series 4, consisting of Mel Hurtig’s political files, contains files related to his membership in and candidacy for the Federal Liberal Party and more extensively, his founding and leading of the National Party of Canada. The National Party records are fascinating in that they clearly document a unique event in the Canadian political landscape. In a time frame of about two years, a party was formed, ran a national election campaign, and was dissolved, with the records in this series documenting the dramatic unfolding of events. Mel Hurtig’s book writing files are retained in Series 5. There are complete drafts of the following Hurtig books: The Betrayal of Canada, At Twilight in the Country, The Vanishing Country, and Rushing to Armageddon. Chapter drafts contain editing comments, corrections and additions and deletions. There are also related clipping and publicity files that document the book signing and speaking tours post publication. Series 6 is broadly defined as personal records, and includes textual files, published material and photographs. While the files contain references to family and personal concerns, again there is the blurring of boundaries with a lot of the e-mail correspondence focusing on political and issue-oriented topics. Hurtig corresponds with well-known Canadians in campaigns designed to oppose missile defense, call attention to issues of Canadian sovereignty and affect political change. The photographs span a period of some sixty years, and also included in this series is a collection of books given to Hurtig by their authors, with Hurtig usually referenced in the book. The final series, Series 7, contains audio-visual records including video-tapes, cassette tapes, and compact discs. The subject matter of this material references all the previous series topics, and is listed in date order. The records are in excellent physical shape and provide a very complete documentation of the activities and passions of a well-known Canadian.

Doug Tomlinson fonds
UAA Fonds 0613 · Archief · 2001

The Doug Tomlinson fonds encompass a wide range of records, documenting the many areas of interest and pursuits Mr. Tomlinson enjoyed. As well as preserving the records that document his personal experiences, Doug Tomlinson actively collected papers associated with organizations and groups he both admired and supported. Hence, the Tomlinson fond contain a valuable collection of papers related to early agrarian organization in Western Canada, particularly the Prairie Provinces, as well as some early imprint and documents dating from just after the turn of the twentieth century. The Doug Tomlinson records arrived in two separate accessions to the University of Alberta Archives, but are merged in this finding-aid. The records arrived in files, but original order was difficult to determine. The papers within a file were generally intact, but within boxes, the files did not appear to be in any specific order. The archivist then surveyed everything to weed out duplicates, and determine series titles for the records. The series titles are based on the record contents. The records consist primarily of textual material, and include original minutes, meeting documents, correspondence, as well as published items and ephemera. In addition to the important early agriculture organization records, there are records documenting union and labour history in Alberta, with particular reference to union locals 47 and 579. Doug Tomlinson's political involvements are represented, along with photographs and pamphlets he attained from the Ukrainian Society for Friendship (dating from the 1960's and later). His involvement with the peace movement, social justice movements, and seniors' rights groups are also well-documented in his papers. There is not much of the purely personal in his collection of papers, reflecting perhaps, the huge role issues and causes played in his, and in his family's, lives. Taken together, the records represent a rich documentation of Alberta's social and political evolution from a network of strictly agrarian communities to a fully evolved post-industrial society. The records are of value to students of Canadian social and political history and supplement any discipline's study of twentieth century Alberta from economics to sociology. Their value is also located in the dearth of primary material documenting Alberta socialism and left-wing movements.

Wilfred Watson Fonds
UAA Fonds 0430 · Archief · 1946 - 1998

The Wilfred Watson fonds span a period of over fifty years, and provide a wonderful record of the creative processes of a noted Canadian poet, playwright, teacher and literary theorist. Wilfred Watson was a writer brimming with ideas and his papers provide evidence of his creative endeavors; his numerous notebooks are filled with drafts of plays and poems, ideas for further development, excerpts from his own reading and study, sketches, and jottings about his daily activities. In addition to his notebooks, there are files of his writing drafts (encompassing the many genre he wrote in), very complete correspondence files, drawing files and sketchbooks, and supplemental material including sound recordings and photographs. The records arrived at the University of Alberta Archives in three separate deposits (the last deposit of records made after Wilfred Watson's death), with excellent listings and descriptions attached. The archivist brought the records in each of the three deposits together physically and intellectually, while retaining many of the original groupings adhered to in the first listings. The notebooks, for example, were kept chronologically by Wilfred Watson, so the notebooks from all three deposits have been pulled together and arranged in their original date order. Likewise, the correspondence in each deposit was arranged alphabetically by correspondent and in the comprehensive finding aid, all of the correspondence is together and arranged in alphabetical order. The series designations include the following eight series, and were arrived at by considering the contents of the records. Watson's notebooks are of particular research value as they provide so much information about Wilfred Watson's creative thought processes, as well as information about his teaching plans, readings, Department of English activities, and even a daily weather observation from his study window. The notebooks also held loose sheets of paper, and these have been removed for conservation purposes and placed in a separate file following the notebook they were retrieved from. The series of literary drafts and writing files is also very significant; often several different versions of a particular poem or even an entire play are present in the files. The writing files take on added significance since they provide evidence of, as Wilfred Watson was once described, "a prolific poet who publishes little." As Diane Bessai noted, Watson's plays, while given lively reviews in the daily press at the times of their first performances, "have not been widely produced since". His writing, particularly his later writing, was often considered controversial and experimetnal, and was not readily published or produced, so it is important that his work is preserved in his own archive. The correspondence files, particularly the letters between Wilfred Watson and Sheila Watson, provide another fascinating glimpse into these writers' minds. The Watsons, due to work and schooling circumstances, lived apart off and on over the years and their letters became their main link. Their letters, written regularly to one another, usually go beyond the ordinary to explore mutual ideas about writing, writers, literature, and projects they are working on in their own studies. A detailed series and file list follows, with further information provided about each of the eight series in the Wilfred Watson fonds. A subject/name index is included at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

Technocracy fonds
UAA Fonds 0563 · Archief · 1995

The records have been arranged in three broad series: Series one is the records of the Edmonton Technocracy regional district; Series two is the Calgary Technocracy regional district records; and Series three is the records of a long-standing individual member of the Edmonton Technocracy group, John Gregory. Within each series are several sub-series to further facilitate the description of the record. Sub-series include: organizational records, office administration files, special collections from individual Technocracy members, outreach and publicity records, and publications. The predominant amount of the fonds is comprised of publications, including newsletters, pamphlets and booklets, reprints and other articles, periodicals, and books. Much of this material is the official publications of Technocracy, Inc. head office, or material published by individual sectors on matters of more local concern. Individual members also wrote papers on a variety of Technocracy topics, and submitted their writings to CHQ (Corporate Headquarters) for comment and approval before considering wider distribution. Also included are other articles, papers, theses and books that write about Technocracy as a topic or about subject-mater of interest to Technocracy members. A published series of lessons discussing Technocracy doctrine was published by Technocracy, Inc. and titled “Technocracy Study Course”; various editions of the Study Course publications are found in this fonds. Technocracy Headquarters also prepared regular ‘general mailings’ and operating instructions which were sent to all their members, and included information updates, book reviews, activity reports and plans for upcoming meetings and visits. Strategies for attracting membership and related outreach activities were discussed in the CHQ mailings, and member sectors responded in turn with monthly reports to CHQ detailing their membership and financial activity, meetings and outreach plans. Series three, John Gregory’s records, includes interesting correspondence between himself and Howard Scott, originator of Technocracy and long-serving Director-in-Chief of Technocracy, Inc. Issues around water and continental hydrology are one topic of their correspondence. Mr. Gregory also collected long playing albums that record a lecture Howard Scott gave in Ohio in 1952. While categorically not a populist movement, the Technocracy papers deposited with the University of Alberta Archives reflect the popular interwar currents of thought in North America regarding the political and economic organization of society. In this sense, the Technocracy movement is significant in the same manner that many prairie populist movements hold historical research value. The records are in excellent physical shape and provide valuable insight into a unique North American social movement.

J. Peter Meekison fonds
UAA Fonds 0403 · Archief · 1950 - 1995

The Peter Meekison fonds document the professional career of an important teacher, researcher, and administrator who had a distinguished career with both the University of Alberta and the Provincial Government of Alberta for a period spanning nearly thirty years. His records contain material relating to both his teaching and administrative career at the University of Alberta, his work related to constitutional affairs for the Province of Alberta, and his role as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The records, largely textual, have been arranged according to four fairly broad series. The first series contains records related to Professor Meekison’s academic pursuits, and include some of his student notes while in the Ph.D program at Duke University and his teaching and administrative files from the University of Alberta. Included with the UofA files are teaching and research files, Vice-President (Academic) administrative files, and files related to special projects, programs, and committees Dr. Meekison was committed to while at the University. The second series contains material related more generally to Peter Meekison’s professional career, which is relevant to both his research interests at the University, and his work with the Provincial Government. There are correspondence files, sorted into the Department of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs chronological files, general correspondence files, and ‘people’ correspondence files. As well, this series contains records related to Meekison’s involvement with various professional associations and committees, his speaking engagements and attendance at conferences and workshops, and his writing and publication activities. Subject reference files maintained by Professor Meekison are included in this series, as well as his personal appointment books. Series three consists of Peter Meekison’s Constitutional material and is arranged according to an original color-coded file scheme applied when the files were current. The color-coded files include reports, briefing books, transcripts, and issues files related to various First Minister meetings, and committee meetings surrounding the constitutional reform discussions. Many of these files were created while Peter Meekison was Minister of Alberta Federal and Inter-Governmental Affairs and relate to the amending of the Constitution Act in 1982. A set of coded files is included in this series which addresses non-Constitutional issues his Ministry was dealing with. In his capacity as constitutional adviser to the provincial government post 1984, there is material related to the Senate Reform Task Force meetings, and the constitutional committee work leading to the Meech Lake Accord discussions and the 1992 Charlottetown Accord. Included in this series are numerous constitutional background material files which provide further insight into the constitutional process and debate. The final series consists of very complete records retained by Peter Meekison in his capacity as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP). The Commission was struck in 1992, and Meekison appointed to it in 1993. Included in the records are meeting minutes and documents, Intervener Participatory Program (IPP) submissions to the Commission, reports prepared for and by the Commission; policy team records, and background and reference files. The records are in excellent physical shape and because of their completeness and the broad span of years represented, provide valuable insight into issues facing Alberta and Canada in the 1980’s and 1990’s, as well as documenting University activities during this period and earlier.

The J. Peter Meekison fonds consists of records related to Professor Meekison's academic pursuits and his career at the University of Albera; his professional activities encompassing his research and writing files; constitutional material including Senate Reform Task Force records and Meech Lake Accord; and records of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.

UAA Fonds 0165 · Archief · 1966-1990

The Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative (ACHC) fonds document the history and function of the Cooperative, and its predecessor, the Campus Co-operative Association. The records span the years from the inception of the Co-operative in 1967, through its existence 21 years later when the records to that date were deposited with the University of Alberta Archives.

The records, largely textual, required a fair amount of sorting when received at the Archives. Papers were removed from binders, and duplicate records disposed. There was a lot of duplication of records, as individual executive members along with each ‘house’ in the Cooperative maintained a set of minutes, audited financial statements, policies and procedures manuals, along with forms for completing maintenance checks and house inventories. As well, the collection was weeded of financial ephemera (invoices, returned cheques, bills, etc) since summary financial records existed. An original listing provided by a then member of the ACHC aided the arrangement and description process.

The records have been sorted into ten series, including: the Cooperative Movement; Executive Committee Records; Minutes (Board and General); Financial Records; Membership Records, Property Management Records; Property Expansion Records; Legal Advice Records; Historic Records; and the Newsletter (The Cooper). Some of the series are very small, while others like the Financial records series and Property Management records series are necessarily arranged into sub-series to better organize the material. There is a complete set of minutes from the 1960s through to January of 1987. Membership records are particularly complete for the mid-1970s to the early 1980s; earlier membership records, particularly for the 1960s, are sketchier. The records are in good physical shape.

The Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative records reflect an interesting alternative to standard student housing arrangements available on the University of Alberta campus in the mid-1960’s. It was, writes Rod Olstad in a 1988 Gateway article, “the first organized, yet unofficial, co-ed housing at the U of A.” Principles of democracy were essential to the Cooperative, with their elected executive, membership votes on all matters of house policy and operation, and safeguards to protect individual members from potential financial liability, etc. Co-op members were instrumental in lobbying the University in 1973 to abandon plans to demolish much of the low-cost housing in the North Garneau neighbourhood, demanding instead that this housing be retained and renovated to ensure that low-cost, alternative housing was available for students.

The ACHC records can also be viewed as a part of the larger national Co-operative housing movement emerging in the same period. The unique living arrangement that is the Cooperative, with its accompanying problems and triumphs, is well documented in these records.

Chancellor and Senate fonds
UAA Fonds 0001 · Archief · 1908-1990

The Chancellor and Senate fonds are among the oldest and most significant records in the University of Alberta Archives. These records document the very inception of the University when through the University of Alberta Act in 1906, the Senate was created as the sole governing body of the University of Alberta. At its first meeting in March 1908, the Senate set the policy for the opening of the University in September 1908. The focus and mandate of the Senate has changed in the ensuing years, but it remains an important component of the University landscape. The Senate represents the public face of the University, and functions with the understanding that "an ongoing relationship with the community is fundamental to the effectiveness of the University." (Senate brochure)

The Chancellor and Senate records deposited with the University Archives span the period from the Senate's establishment as the governing body of the University, to its present functions within the University milieu. These records were received in numerous accessions over the past years, and although physically dispersed, are brought together intellectually in this comprehensive finding-aid to the fonds.

The records have been arranged within three broad series, and further arranged according to sub-series designations as well. Series 1 is the Chancellor and Senate Office administrative records, and include the Executive Officer files; Senate Office files related to Senate membership, correspondence, public relations, and financial matters; and Senate meetings. The meeting files are extensive, and fairly complete in terms of years represented. Early Senate meeting minutes were recorded in bound minute books and are complete from 1903 through 1970. Beginning in 1949, individual meeting files were maintained and contain agendas, minutes, related correspondence, and printed attachments related to specific Senate meetings. The Series 1 records present an excellent overall view of the day-to-day function of the Senate, and document its evolving role within the University of Alberta.

Series 2 records represent the Operational records of the Chancellor and Senate, and include those records related to the research and gathering of information, and the public presentation of this gathered knowledge. Sub-series within this broad series include Reports (usually ones presented to the Senate); Committees; Task Forces; and Hearings/Investigations/Commissions. The records are often quite linked within these sub-series; for example, an Ad Hoc Committee might be struck to consider a specific issue or topic, and this in turn may lead to the establishment of a task force to further develop and explore the topic, as well as prepare a comprehensive report on the findings. The Committee files document activities of the Senate standing committees and ad hoc committees, as well as joint University-wide committees with Senate representation. A particularly significant Senate activity involves the conferring of honorary degrees, and the Honorary Degree Committee files provide a wealth of information about the recipients of these degrees. Their files often contain biographical information about the recipient, nominating papers, photographs, and related correspondence. As the Chancellor is involved with all convocations, the Convocation Committee files also present a variety of information related to honorary degrees specifically, and convocation generally. There are often convocation programs, speeches, invitations, and planning documents. Within the Task Force sub-series, records concerning twenty-five task force investigations are represented, and arranged in their chronological order of establishment within the finding aid. The fourth sub-series of Hearings/Commissions/Investigations is a smaller set of records, and relates to broader University and public wide inquiries.

The final series of records relates to the Chancellors' papers. While information about the role of the Chancellor can be gleaned from all three series of records, this particular series focuses on the role of individual chancellors. Sub-series include Chancellor Installation ceremonies; Chancellor meetings; photographs; and the papers of individual Chancellors. The series is limited in that only nine individual Chancellors are represented (18 Chancellors have served the University between 1908 and 2008), and some of this information is sketchy and limited in scope. However, further information about individual Chancellors can be researched by consulting their private paper donations, or considering the correspondence files in Series 1.

The Chancellor and Senate fonds form a significant contribution to the documentation of the history and ongoing activities of the University of Alberta.
