Alberta School Curriculum Historical Bibliography 1885-1985 (Elementary Resources)

  • Collection

The Alberta School Curriculum Historical Bibliography 1885-1985 is a list of the materials authorized for use in Alberta schools during this time period. Many of the materials listed here are housed in the University of Alberta's Research & Collections Resource Facility, and may be viewed by appointment.

This bibliography was made possible by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant. Efforts were made to identify and create a database of all the Kindergarten to grade 12 learning resources that had been authorized by the territorial authorities prior to Alberta becoming a province in 1905, and the provincial authorities responsible for education since then. This project resulted in the Historical Database of Authorized Learning Resources, from which this bibliography was produced.

The project team consisted of: Josie Tong, principal investigator, Ila Scott, project leader, and team members Maureen Beristain and Barbara Owens. Other reference staff in the Herbert T. Coutts Library were involved and provided invaluable assistance as the project progressed.

Peter Lougheed fonds

  • UAA Fonds 0420
  • Fonds
  • Predominantly 1965-2004

Peter Lougheed is a former premier of Alberta (1971-1985) who was in charge of the Progressive Conservative government in the province during an era of significant development for Alberta in relation to the energy sectors and provincial contribution to the national scene. Peter Lougheed was born in Calgary on July 26, 1928, son of Edgar and Edna Lougheed and grandson of Sir James Alexander Lougheed. He was educated in Calgary public schools, was awarded a BA. and LLB. from the University of Alberta in 1951 and 1952 respectively, and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1954, Lougheed was elected leader of a moribund Progressive Conservative party in Alberta in 1965, and went on to win a seat in the legislature in 1967, and to become premier at the head of a new Progressive Conservative government in 1971 He was premier of the province through tumultuous years of boom and bust, the development of the energy industry, and federal-provincial conflicts. Lougheed retired from politics in 1985 after winning four successive election victories. Since leaving politics, Lougheed has been partner and counsel with Bennett Jones law firm in Calgary, active in international business pursuits, and much involved in national issues of trade and constitutional reform. Today Lougheed makes his home in Calgary. He continues to be involved in business pursuits, actively supports various organizations, and speaks out on matters of public concern. For a more complete biography see archivist’s file.
These records were in Lougheed’s custody in various locations over the years. Some of the early scrapbooks and other material in the fonds was originally assembled outside Lougheed’s office and without his direction by other interested parties and given to Lougheed as part of his memorabilia collection. Originally, prior to 1971, items collected seem to have been kept in P. C. party or Official Opposition offices, but during Lougheed’s long term as premier, they were kept in his Calgary premier’s office, and after he left public office, in his law office at Bennett Jones. They were later stored at the Ranchmen’s Club and were transferred to the Lougheed House archives in 2004.
The fonds consists of quasi-personal material collected by Lougheed during the course of his political and post-political career, along with a few pertinent items saved from his pre-political life. This is essentially a collection of items chosen by Peter Lougheed (or, in the case of newsclippings, but staff under his direction) to document that part of his life which has been in the public eye since 1965, and to showcase aspects of those public achievements which gave him particular personal satisfaction, or were simply fun, In the manner of a scrapbook, this collection was always intended as a display.
The collection documents, from Lougheed’s personal point of view and from that of the mass media, his career in Progressive Conservative party politics and campaigns throughout his tenure as premier, his official activities while in public office as leader of the opposition and premier, and his ongoing service to the community and the nation since 1985.

Workplace

Information for specific occupations outside of Health and Medicine. Approximately half of the items in this series are intended for teachers, administrators or instructors in schools and colleges. It includes information from the UK, USA and Canada. There are Information bulletins from Alberta Education (Canada), the Department of Health and Human Services (USA) and the UK Department of Education and Science. there is one catalog of AIDS related teaching materials and three versions of an English as a Second Language teaching resource.

The other half of this series is for a variety of non-educational occupational settings, the majority are general and cover concerns like sharing equipment or lockers rooms with someone with AIDS. There are however two with very specific audiences, food and beverage workers and personal service (grooming) workers. there is also a single brochure that seems to be for anyone who works in downtown Vancouver B.C.

Health Professionals

This series contains four sub-series all of which are directed at Health Personnel or First Responders who may come into contact with bodily fluids during their normal work day.

Most of this series is information which targets the specific concerns of workers in public safety, health and emergency personnel. There is also information for Dentists. Most of this series in in the form of booklets or full sized bulletins or newsletters. One booklet which is present in three versions, two from 1984 and one from 1988, show both the progression of information and regional differences in how it was communicated.

Three items target concerns regarding Blood Donation and Blood Supply. The booklet from Saskatchewan Health is comprehensive in describing what all levels of hospital staff must do as 'Universal precautions against blood-born pathogens.'

Complementary Health Practitioners and practices are discussed in three newsletters on the following topics: Chinese Herbs, Clear Heat, and Acupuncture. The newsletters are 'Professional Health Concerns' and 'the Quan Yin Newsletter.'

There are a few training and resource items and one information kit from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA. This kit is especially interesting to Health researchers as it contains the collections only examples of scholarly articles and abstracts regarding condoms as an effective preventative measure. It dates from 1993 and includes tip-sheets for talking points with patients and three A4 sized posters promoting condom use.
