The accession comprises textual records including the written history, scrapbook, newspaper clippings, articles, notes and correspondence regarding the University of Alberta Golden Bears Football Team and the Golden Bowl game played November 16, 1963.

The contents of the accession reflect Ellen Schoeck’s research process during the creation of her book Taking Care, as well as her experience as Director of the University Secretariat, a position through which she served a number of University presidents over a period of 28 years, including Myer Horowitz. Textual records consist of Schoeck’s research materials for Taking Care, and include photocopies of articles, yearbook pages, and reports, as well as interviews and other documents related to campus housing and alumni from the 1950s until present. Photographs and film negatives are from Schoeck’s time as Director of the University Secretariat, and are arranged chronologically according to the University president in office at the time, illustrating the experience working in the senior administration office through various presidencies.

The RCMP Book Collection of S/Sgt. Al Lund is comprised of books, comics, magazines, and print ephemera that document the history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Over the course of fifty years, distinguished Staff Sergeant (retired) of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Alert Henry (Al) Lund amassed the largest ever collection of Mountie books and serials. His collection was donated to the University of Alberta Libraries in tranches beginning in 2008, and all of the rare materials are now housed at Bruce Peel Special Collections. An exhibition catalogue showing highlights from the Lund Collection was published by the University of Alberta Libraries in 2017. Mounties on the Cover is a visually stunning catalogue that offers a sample of the thousands of cover illus­trations of Mounties that were published. The catalogue for this exhibition can be purchased through University of Alberta Press or Indigo or in person in the Peel library for $25 (cash only).

Fonds consists of illustrations by Ian Sheldon of various insects including butterflies, moths, beetles, and true bugs. Many of these illustrations were done for various projects and publications. This collection offers an expansive view of the experiences of Chinese immigrants to Canada, particularly in the Prairie Provinces. While many narratives of Chinese immigration to Canada focus on the construction of the CPR, the emphasis here is on the numerous and diverse roles that Chinese immigrants played in Canada's history. This collection explores the Chinese experience through immigration, entrepreneurship, schooling, and other elements of daily life. Among other things, it is made up of photographs, scrapbooks, business documents, personal correspondence, immigration records, magazines, books, phonograph records, and event programs. A great deal of credit is due to Helen Kwan Yee Cheung, who encouraged donations from the local Chinese community thus helping to build a uniquely community-based collection.

The collection consists of fishing-related ephemeral material such as brochures, maps, photographs, two photo albums, magazine clippings, catalogues, typed speeches, menus, and anglers' ticket books. The majority of the items are from various locations in Canada or the United States of America. Non-North American items include four brochures from New Zealand, and several miscellaneous items from the United Kingdom. Most of the ephemera are from the mid-twentieth century, but the dates are as early as 1909 and as late as 2000. Many of the items in this collection also cover outdoor recreational activities popular at their time of creation.

Accession consists of non-chemistry research conducted by Gordon R. Freeman on a stone structure near Majorville, located in South Eastern Alberta. There, Freeman discovered stones arranged by humans. One significant stone structure was identified as a widespread "Temple to the Sun, Moon and Morningstar." During the period 1980-2014, Freeman took many photos (2,000) of the temple and area. These images comprise a significant volume of the accession and were used widely in the seven volume publication: "Temple to the Sun, Moon and Morningstar." The book depicts that indigenous peoples on the Great Plains 5000 years ago had significant scientific knowledge of the motions of the lights in the sky. The records including photographs, field notes, research notes, site excavation information, presentation, conference information and presentations (namely Archeoastronomy conference 1998), correspondence and observations embodying the work that led to the writing of two additional books of the site: "Canada's Stonehenge" (2009) and "Hidden Stonehenge" (2012).

Accession consists of office files from the Bruce Peel Special Collections related to the Sam Steele Collection, including files from exhibits, research, and publications related to the collection. Collection consists of the original handwritten transcriptions of The Beginning of Print Culture in Athabasca County, as well as copies of transcriptions with notes from the various contributor. This book is a facsimile edition and translation of a Prayer Book in Cree Syllabics by Fathe Émile Grouard, OMI, which was originall prepared and printed at Lac La Biche in 1883.

Fonds consist of David McKnight’s Canadian Little Magazine and Small Press archive, reflecting his interest in documenting the history of this genre of Canadian publishing, and include the pioneering work in the field done by Wynne Francis whose research files form part of the fonds. Through both of their collecting, the David McKnight fonds consists of materials which cover the history of Canadian small press publishing from 1923-2010.

The designation of the series was arrived at after considering the ordering of the material as it was received at Bruce Peel Special Collections. It was clear that there was an original ordering of the files, often according to an alphabetical or chronological scheme, and the files had titles. David McKnight separated his files broadly into those associated with his mentor and advisor, Wynne Francis, and his own research/collection files, and as much as possible, this structure is maintained. Series titles were arrived at after considering the collection in its entirety, and the apparent order implied by McKnight’s file listings and comments. The material was received in two shipments, but was intended as one donation, so some assignment of series and file titles, combining the material in the two shipments, was necessary. The records are almost all textual, although there are three microfilm reels, two cassette tapes, and two photographs.

Taking into consideration both the information provided by David McKnight in a letter to the Head of Bruce Peel Special Collections, and the contents of the records received, six series and several sub-series were established to better facilitate access to the collection.

The theatre records include photographs, video recordings, programs, posters, and other records about theatre productions. The Faculté Saint-Jean records include photographs of campus, faculty, events, and students, as well as academic planning meeting minutes. The accession also contains research material and papers about French language education, records about the Institute pour le patrimoine de la francophonie de l'Ouest canadien and other French language rights groups, and other related records.

This fonds contains the records of the University of Alberta chemistry professor Dr. Walter Harris. He was instrumental in the modernization of the University’s successful Analytical Chemistry program. Dr Harris was acclaimed for his work in chemistry education, scientific research, and committee service.

The materials date from 1915 to 2011. The records predominately date after Harris began his career at the University of Alberta in 1946. The collection is rich in teaching materials, including a number of lectures written verbatim, an abundance of lecture slides and audio visual recordings of Walter Harris lecturing, as well as a significant amount of Dr. Harris’ research papers and supporting information. The fonds also incorporates materials related to the history of the Chemistry Department at the University of Alberta. In addition, it provides insight into Harris’ book publications with related correspondence, revisions and notes. The fonds is abundant in records relating to Harris’ work as a committee member including meeting minutes, agendas, committee reports, and correspondence.

This fonds contains an array of document types including such textual materials as notes, correspondence, talks, programs, pamphlets, articles, cards, course materials, announcements, books, and personal history information. It also contains yearbooks, plaques, certificates and newspaper clippings, as well as a variety of media types including photographs, slides, negatives, lantern slides, a 16mm film, reel-to-reel audiotapes, a VHS videocassette, a u-matic video tape, and a CD-ROM disk. The fonds geographically pertains predominantly to Canada with some materials created in the United States, and a few materials generated in countries abroad. Walter Harris was awarded this certificate as part of Alberta's centennial celebrations. The certificate reads: "The Alberta Centennial Medal is conferred upon Walter Edgar Harris. In recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta September 1, 2005".

Peter Lougheed is a former premier of Alberta (1971-1985) who was in charge of the Progressive Conservative government in the province during an era of significant development for Alberta in relation to the energy sectors and provincial contribution to the national scene. Peter Lougheed was born in Calgary on July 26, 1928, son of Edgar and Edna Lougheed and grandson of Sir James Alexander Lougheed. He was educated in Calgary public schools, was awarded a BA. and LLB. from the University of Alberta in 1951 and 1952 respectively, and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1954, Lougheed was elected leader of a moribund Progressive Conservative party in Alberta in 1965, and went on to win a seat in the legislature in 1967, and to become premier at the head of a new Progressive Conservative government in 1971 He was premier of the province through tumultuous years of boom and bust, the development of the energy industry, and federal-provincial conflicts. Lougheed retired from politics in 1985 after winning four successive election victories. Since leaving politics, Lougheed has been partner and counsel with Bennett Jones law firm in Calgary, active in international business pursuits, and much involved in national issues of trade and constitutional reform. Today Lougheed makes his home in Calgary. He continues to be involved in business pursuits, actively supports various organizations, and speaks out on matters of public concern. These records were in Lougheed’s custody in various locations over the years. Some of the early scrapbooks and other material in the fonds was originally assembled outside Lougheed’s office and without his direction by other interested parties and given to Lougheed as part of his memorabilia collection. Originally, prior to 1971, items collected seem to have been kept in P. C. party or Official Opposition offices, but during Lougheed’s long term as premier, they were kept in his Calgary premier’s office, and after he left public office, in his law office at Bennett Jones. They were later stored at the Ranchmen’s Club and were transferred to the Lougheed House archives in 2004.
The fonds consists of quasi-personal material collected by Lougheed during the course of his political and post-political career, along with a few pertinent items saved from his pre-political life. This is essentially a collection of items chosen by Peter Lougheed (or, in the case of newsclippings, but staff under his direction) to document that part of his life which has been in the public eye since 1965, and to showcase aspects of those public achievements which gave him particular personal satisfaction, or were simply fun, In the manner of a scrapbook, this collection was always intended as a display.
The collection documents, from Lougheed’s personal point of view and from that of the mass media, his career in Progressive Conservative party politics and campaigns throughout his tenure as premier, his official activities while in public office as leader of the opposition and premier, and his ongoing service to the community and the nation since 1985.

Accession consists of copies of minutes of departmental staff meetings of the Department of Physiology.

Accession contains manuscripts in various stages of development, from hand drawn conceptual diagrams to corrected proofs. Included are: Research notes, uncorrected proofs, corrected proofs, typesetting proofs, finished monographs, audio recordings, publicity materials, cover art and proofs, newspaper clippings and reviews and relative correspondence. There are 15 titles represented plus some smaller works for anthologies and two manuscripts under the pen name, June Edwards. There are also two signed monographs by other authors.

The contents of the accession spans across almost fifty years and provides valuable insight into the development of Peel's Bibliography of the Canadian Prairies and Peel’s Prairie Provinces database. Mostly textual records and correspondence, the records depict efforts to find and select published works for the bibliographies, various stages of the book’s completion, and conversations between Peel staff and other institutions and individuals that went into the creation of the Bibliographies.

The Dr. Chuji Hiruki fonds is a very rich and diverse acquisition of materials depicting the life and primarily teaching and research career of Chuji Hiruki. This accession of material comprises a broad scope of records comprising mainly of textual materials reflective of his teaching, research travel and role as a professor of plant pathology during his tenure with the University of Alberta.

The archives comprise documentation about the history of thee East Asian Studies Llbrary holdings comprising Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) collection at UA library from 1970s to 2000. Aside from library correspondence, there are also reports on East Asian studies department (founding and expansion) especially as they relate to library concerns along with budget and statistical information.

The Violet Archer fonds span a period of over seventy years, and provide a valuable record of the composing, research, teaching and life experiences of a noted University professor and internationally recognized composer of music. The Violet Archer fonds is unusually complete, with intact records that illustrate both professional and personal facets of her life. As noted in the introduction, the Archer records, except for her original compositions and scores, arrived at the University of Alberta Archives without much evidence of original order or organization. While her scores and musical compositions had been listed and numbered by James Whittle, Department of Music librarian at the University of Alberta, the remainder of her records was transferred in large boxes to the Archives from her home in Ottawa. Boxes were labeled as coming from her basement, piano bench, bookshelves, etc. but were pretty mixed in each box. A large volume of the textual records is comprised of correspondence, and while the correspondence tended to be boxed together, within any single box would be a range of letters spanning any number of years. Correspondence from the 1950's was interspersed with correspondence from the 1990's. Each letter appeared to be methodically opened with a letter opener, read, and returned to the envelope (even Christmas and birthday cards were returned to their envelopes). Other like records were often boxed together; teaching files in single boxes, and boxes containing books, others with sound recordings, etc., providing the only evidence of extant original order. The large volume of records received, however, essentially loose and unorganized, necessitated the imposing of order by the archivist. Two page series were determined, that of professional and personal papers, and several sub-series delineated within each of these two series. Series One Professional and Career-related papers, are the largest of the two series and are organized into several sub-series. The sub-series designations are based on the contents of the records, and often chronological in terms of order within each sub-series. Within Series One are student records (Archer as student); teaching records, chronicling her years on faculty at North Texas State College, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Alberta; correspondence files; composing records; and reference records. The sub-series are substantial in size, and provide a wealth of information about Archer's professional life. Within the correspondence files, there is outgoing and incoming chronologically arranged correspondence, letters with identified individuals, reference letters, correspondence with associations and organizations, and publishing project and music dealer correspondence. The composition and composing sub-series of records is further organized into performing rights organization records, music publishers contracts and correspondence, conference and workshop records, performances, honors and awards, and original Archer compositions. The sub-series of reference material is also extensive, and includes listings of the imprint, books, music by other composers, and a collection of sound recordings maintained by Archer. Of especial significance, are the files of original Archer scores and compositions. A significant number of her compositions are represented in these holdings, and provide evidence about the steps and processes involved in creating a piece of music from manuscript beginnings to a final published piece of music. Series Two, Violet Archer's personal papers, while much smaller in extent than Series One, provide a fascinating glimpse of the person behind the public persona of professor and composer. Her personal correspondence files, particularly the incoming and outgoing correspondence with her younger sister Carolyn, document the emotions, struggles, triumphs and challenges she faces as a woman functioning in a very male-dominated field and time period. Carolyn is the one person that Violet freely confides in, and she shares thoughts, feelings, and philosophies with her sister that are only touched upon in the other records housed in the fonds. Rounding out the personal records in Series Two are other correspondence files, financial records, insurance records, artwork, and a large photographic sub-series. The Violet Archer fonds provides numerous research opportunities. Students of music history, composition, and theory will find the records valuable, as well as individuals interested in researching a woman's career path in pre-and post-second world war North American society. There are records related to the music scene in both the U.S. and Canada, letters exchanged with well-known musicians, colleagues, writers and students; and many documents associated with the music publishing industry. The growth of the University of Alberta's music department is documented in the records, as is the growth of Canadian music organizations. The completeness, extent, and condition of the Violet Archer fonds ensure its strong informational and evidential research value.
