Alberta Research CouncilThe Alberta School Curriculum Historical Bibliography 1885-1985 is a list of the materials authorized for use in Alberta schools during this time period. Many of the materials listed here are housed in the University of Alberta's Research & Collections Resource Facility, and may be viewed by appointment.
This bibliography was made possible by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant. Efforts were made to identify and create a database of all the Kindergarten to grade 12 learning resources that had been authorized by the territorial authorities prior to Alberta becoming a province in 1905, and the provincial authorities responsible for education since then. This project resulted in the Historical Database of Authorized Learning Resources, from which this bibliography was produced.
The project team consisted of: Josie Tong, principal investigator, Ila Scott, project leader, and team members Maureen Beristain and Barbara Owens. Other reference staff in the Herbert T. Coutts Library were involved and provided invaluable assistance as the project progressed.

Henry, Arthur Wellesley CampbellThe Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative (ACHC) fonds document the history and function of the Cooperative, and its predecessor, the Campus Co-operative Association. The records span the years from the inception of the Co-operative in 1967, through its existence 21 years later when the records to that date were deposited with the University of Alberta Archives.
The records, largely textual, required a fair amount of sorting when received at the Archives. Papers were removed from binders, and duplicate records disposed. There was a lot of duplication of records, as individual executive members along with each ‘house’ in the Cooperative maintained a set of minutes, audited financial statements, policies and procedures manuals, along with forms for completing maintenance checks and house inventories. As well, the collection was weeded of financial ephemera (invoices, returned cheques, bills, etc) since summary financial records existed. An original listing provided by a then member of the ACHC aided the arrangement and description process.
The records have been sorted into ten series, including: the Cooperative Movement; Executive Committee Records; Minutes (Board and General); Financial Records; Membership Records, Property Management Records; Property Expansion Records; Legal Advice Records; Historic Records; and the Newsletter (The Cooper). Some of the series are very small, while others like the Financial records series and Property Management records series are necessarily arranged into sub-series to better organize the material. There is a complete set of minutes from the 1960s through to January of 1987. Membership records are particularly complete for the mid-1970s to the early 1980s; earlier membership records, particularly for the 1960s, are sketchier. The records are in good physical shape.
The Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative records reflect an interesting alternative to standard student housing arrangements available on the University of Alberta campus in the mid-1960’s. It was, writes Rod Olstad in a 1988 Gateway article, “the first organized, yet unofficial, co-ed housing at the U of A.†Principles of democracy were essential to the Cooperative, with their elected executive, membership votes on all matters of house policy and operation, and safeguards to protect individual members from potential financial liability, etc. Co-op members were instrumental in lobbying the University in 1973 to abandon plans to demolish much of the low-cost housing in the North Garneau neighbourhood, demanding instead that this housing be retained and renovated to ensure that low-cost, alternative housing was available for students.
The ACHC records can also be viewed as a part of the larger national Co-operative housing movement emerging in the same period. The unique living arrangement that is the Cooperative, with its accompanying problems and triumphs, is well documented in these records.

Bruce Peel Special CollectionsThe collection consists of postcards, postcard packages, souvenir booklets, photographs, greeting cards, and books. The materials span three eras of Byron Harmon and his successors’ photography and publishing business. The first part of the collection is of Byron Harmon’s work (ca. 1905 to ca. 1942) that was published under his name. The second part includes the publications created when Byron Harmon’s son Don Harmon took over the company and changed the name to Byron Harmon Photos (ca. 1946 to 1979). The final iteration of the company was Altitude Publishing (ca. 1979 to 2008), which was run by Don Harmon’s daughter Carole Harmon and Stephen Hutchings. In 1991 Carole Harmon left the company and Hutchings moved the business from Banff to Canmore, Alberta, where he continued operations until the company closed in 2008.
The early Byron Harmon series features photography mostly by Byron Harmon. As the company developed and became Byron Harmon Photos other family members and photographers are credited. The Harmon family members who are credited throughout the Byron Harmon Photos and Altitude Publishing eras are Aileen Harmon, Don Harmon, Carole Harmon, and Stephen Hutchings. The photographs are mostly of the Rocky Mountain and Columbia Mountain regions in Alberta and British Columbia and include sights in Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, and the Yoho Valley. While Harmon and his successors specialized in nature photography, the collection has some groups of non-nature photographic postcards taken by Byron Harmon. These postcards feature urban views of Vancouver and Calgary, agricultural scenes, and scenes and portraits of Indigenous Peoples. There are also photographs of interior and exterior views of tourist destinations such as the Chateau Lake Louise and the Banff Springs Hotel.
The last series of the collection includes published books that span from 1978 to 1992. Two are from the Byron Harmon Photos era (published by Oxford University Press) and two are published by Altitude Publishing.
Harmon, ByronThe Byron Kratochvil fonds documents the professional career of an important teacher, researcher, writer and administrator who was associated with the University of Alberta for over thirty years. Dr. Kratochvil attained recognition as a respected analytical chemist, and served the University of Alberta as a professor of Chemistry, chairman of the Department of Chemistry, and as an administrator in his role as Associate Vice-President (Research). The records, largely textual, document Byron Kratochvil’s career at the University of Alberta, but also touch upon his earlier teaching experiences and research interests. The records provide a significant documentation of Kratochvil’s teaching career, with several files of lecture notes, student examinations and projects, and class records. Also strongly represented in the fonds, are the records generated from the textbooks written by Kratochvil and W.E. Harris and originally computer-published by the University of Alberta. Various drafts of the textbooks are retained in the records, complete with numerous annotations, inserts, corrections and research notes. There are fairly complete files of Chemistry Department-related records in the Kratochvil fonds, which include meeting minutes, internal memorandum, and committee reports retained on an annual basis. Byron Kratochvil was chair of the Department of Chemistry from 1989-1995, so the Department material for these years provides insight into the role of the Chairman, and the relationship the Department had with the larger Faculty of Science it reported to. Included also are the documents generated by the various University committees and research groups Professor Kratochvil sat on; of particular note are detailed files related to the Environmental Research and Studies Centre. A smaller series contains records generated during Byron Kratochvil’s time as Associate Vice-President (Research). A comprehensive set of Byron Kratochvil’s professional correspondence forms one series, and provides a record of his written communication with colleagues, graduate students, and scientific associations, relating to his research and various other issues. Among Kratochvil’s research interest topics are those in the area of the theory and application of sampling for chemical analysis; the measurement of free metal ion concentrations in solution; and the development of new analytical reagents and methods in nonacqueous solvents. Two smaller series contain documents linked to professional associations Professor Kratochvil supported, with textual and photographs items documenting scientific conferences and workshops he attended; as well as consulting work undertaken. The final series in this finding-aid consists of material designated as ‘personal’, although still very related to the series that precede it. Included here are copies of personnel documents related to salary and promotions, copies of CV’s and biographies as well as day planners and collected archives. The records are in excellent physical shape and because of their completeness and the broad span of years represented, provide valuable insight into one man’s career at the University of Alberta..
