A travel brochure advertising the Astoria Hotel in Jasper, Alberta. The hotel was owned and operated by George Andrews and his sons and marketed itself as open all year round. The brochure claims that guests will “be impressed with the homelike atmosphere and personalized attention [they] will receive.” The Astoria Hotel, which still stands today, is located very centrally in Jasper. The brochure lists the prices of different kinds of rooms and also provides information about various sightseeing tours and services provided by the hotel. The brochure was printed by Bulman Bros. Ltd. in Winnipeg.

The printed text of a speech delivered by the Honourable Zachariah Chandler of Michigan in the Senate of the United States on April 22, 1870. The subject of the speech was the proposed annexation of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The speech was a proposal for the President of the United States to appoint two or more diplomatic commissioners to open a dialogue with the people of Winnipeg, Manitoba and propose the annexation of the city as a territory or state of the United States. Throughout the speech, several responses from others are recorded such as the vice-president, but the majority of the content was said by Zachariah Chandler. The President of the United States at the time of this speech was Ulysses S. Grant. The pamphlet was printed at the Office of the Congressional Globe.

The photograph of rippling water on the front of the calendar flips up to reveal an index for the calendar. Each month of the calendar year consists of three (3) to six (6) different recipes outlined on the upper page, and the days of the month on the lower page. Examples of recipes include Eggs Aurora, Wiener Kabobs, Beef Pie with Cheese, and Spiced Caramel Upside Down Cake.

The card states that the funeral will take place on March 29th, 1894 at 2:00 pm from his father’s residence to the Mapleton Cemetery in Selkirk, Alberta.

PE002498 - Satirical twenty dollar Ralph Bucks bill for use in private hospitals

A satirical twenty dollar bill for Ralph Bucks from Calgary, Alberin 2000. The writing on the bill states that it is for use in private hospitals and is a “legal tender for increased administration costs, advertising, unnecessary treatments, and profit.” On the front of the bill, there is an unflattering cartoon illustration of Ralph Klein, former premier of Alberta who was in office from December 14, 1992, to December 14, 2006. The bill is meant as a satirical commentary on rising private healthcare costs. On the back of the bill are several phone numbers for key political figures in Alberta whom people are encouraged to call to oppose hiked health care costs. The bill is presumably a response to the Klein government’s decision to cut healthcare spending by 21% between 1994 and 1996 and the increase in the privitization of healthcare systems.

The greeting card contains a copy of "The Heart of Merry Christmas", a 12-page speech by Canadian author Robertson Davies given to the Canadian Club in Toronto on 14 December 1970 regarding Christmas. Davies' address touches on themes of Christianity, theology, astrology, the Age of Aquarius and the Aeon of Pisces, and the persistence of Christmas "in some form or other".

Davies' speech concludes "So long as the sun continues to celebrate Christmas by his steady convalescence we may let the Aeons of the World Zodiac bring what they will, for we shall have been given new hope, and that is, after all, what lies at the heart of a Merry Christmas."

The event was a talk from Mrs. Philip Snowden about “Russia Under the Bolsheviks” during her tour across Canada for the National Council of Education. The postcard is addressed to the Honourable J.E. Adamson at the courthouse in “City” which was presumably Winnipeg, Alberta. The postcard, if presented at the event, enables the bearer to purchase a ticket for the event for 25 cents.
