Sem títuloThe Romanet papers consist of correspondence, notebooks and reports on the fur trade, and the manuscripts of Kabluk of the Eskimo including several revisions. When the collection was received by the Archives in 1972, only a small part was preserved in Louis Romanets own meticulous arrangement. Care has been taken to maintain these files in their original order; but it was necessary to sort and arrange the bulk of the collection to define Romanet's career. One of the journals he composed during his first winter in Canada exists only as a carbon copy on tissue sheets. It is so fragile that a transcription has been made for the use of researchers. The 860 photographs in the collection depict the Hudson's Bay Company's employees, trading posts, and stern-wheel steamships; the native population of Northern Canada including the Arctic Islands; and the Romanet family. Almost 100 of the photographs were collected from Government and Hudsons Bay Company sources to illustrate Kabluk of the Eskimo, although only sixteen were used in the published version. A descriptive inventory was prepared in 1975. This inventory was revised and reprinted in 1997, however, the physical arrangement of the fonds was not altered.

The Reta Rowan fonds covers the years from 1940 to 1971. The material consists of correspondence, minutes, briefs, reports, publications, periodicals, newspapers, drawings, print and negative photographs. The books in the Reta Rowan fonds were listed on a separate inventory in 1977. Originally, the majority of the files were arranged in chronological order under the society's or association's title, while the remainder were filed by the organization's name or by subject, or left unlabelled. Mrs. Rowan's arrangement has been followed where possible but all unlabelled or loose files have been placed in the proper year or provided with a subject title.

The manuscripts of his published and unpublished books, and of his speeches and writings on scientific and social matters, are an important part of the papers. Professor Rowan pioneered research in migration patterns and corresponded with major scientific figures across North America, Great Britain, and the European Continent. Recognized as a talented scientific artist he designed the whooping crane stamp for the Canada Post Office in 1954. His zoological designs also originated from his work in the Canadian and international conservation movement. His speeches, radio talks and writing reflect his interest in world political matters and the nuclear age. The Rowan family members wrote often and at length to each other. Their letters include their observation of local, national and international affairs from 1908 to 1957.

Thomas fonds span a period of over forty years, and provide a valuable record of the research, teaching, and life experiences of a significant scholar and long-serving member of the University of Alberta's faculty. In his career as an archivist; professor; and researcher and writer of scholarly history, Dr. Thomas' papers encompass a wide range of topics related to the historical development of Western Canada. The source material and research files in this fonds include a wealth of archival documents, bibliographies, imprint items, and research notes on subjects related to the exploration, settlement, and growth of Western Canada, particularly the Prairie region. Dr. Thomas published extensively in this area, and his research files and lecture note material provide insight into the many subjects he lectured and wrote about. They provide insight also into the research methodologies and strategies that he applied in his own work. There is information related to his teaching career at both the Universities of Saskatchewan (Regina) and Alberta, and documents related to the Department of History at the University of Alberta, and Professor Thomas' position as chairman of this department. Among his papers are files of professional correspondence that contain letters written to colleagues, including many well-known Canadian historians, across the country. There is correspondence with graduate students whose work Dr. Thomas supervised, and letters of recommendation prepared by Thomas for these same students as they applied for grants or employment opportunities. Shortly before he died, L.H. Thomas wrote to a young writer that "the aspect of my work which has given me the greatest satisfaction is teaching, and associations with students." (See Accession #87-130-4) He supervised the work of six doctoral students, several masters' students, and sat as a member of many thesis supervising committees. As the long-serving Alberta representative on the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board, L.H. Thomas' papers contain a great deal of information about the workings of the board with particular reference to the naming of historic sites in Alberta and Northern Canada. L.H. Thomas' varied committee experience and affiliation with other national organizations and associations is well documented in the papers. As well, L.H. Thomas' experience as an archivist, and his life-long interest in promoting and encouraging the use of archival documents in historical research, is a subject touched upon frequently in his papers. He corresponds with archivists, writes about archival practice, and fills his source material files with items gleaned from archival holdings. Finally, researchers interested in the topic of Canadian socialism may find these records relevant. L.H. Thomas was himself a life-long supporter of socialist doctrine, and published articles on the CCF and Socialist movements. His last major work before his death was a transcription of a series of taped interviews with Tommy Douglas, and records related to this subject are included in the papers. The records are in excellent physical condition and have been arranged into four series: Early Records; University of Alberta Records; Research and Publication Records; and Associations, Committees and Boards Records. Within these broad series designations are sub-series that further organize the records. Where possible, the file titles provided by L.H. Thomas are retained. A brief description of each series is provided, followed by a detailed file listing. A subject and name index is found at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

Sem títuloThe Peter Meekison fonds document the professional career of an important teacher, researcher, and administrator who had a distinguished career with both the University of Alberta and the Provincial Government of Alberta for a period spanning nearly thirty years. His records contain material relating to both his teaching and administrative career at the University of Alberta, his work related to constitutional affairs for the Province of Alberta, and his role as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. The records, largely textual, have been arranged according to four fairly broad series. The first series contains records related to Professor Meekison’s academic pursuits, and include some of his student notes while in the Ph.D program at Duke University and his teaching and administrative files from the University of Alberta. Included with the UofA files are teaching and research files, Vice-President (Academic) administrative files, and files related to special projects, programs, and committees Dr. Meekison was committed to while at the University. The second series contains material related more generally to Peter Meekison’s professional career, which is relevant to both his research interests at the University, and his work with the Provincial Government. There are correspondence files, sorted into the Department of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs chronological files, general correspondence files, and ‘people’ correspondence files. As well, this series contains records related to Meekison’s involvement with various professional associations and committees, his speaking engagements and attendance at conferences and workshops, and his writing and publication activities. Subject reference files maintained by Professor Meekison are included in this series, as well as his personal appointment books. Series three consists of Peter Meekison’s Constitutional material and is arranged according to an original color-coded file scheme applied when the files were current. The color-coded files include reports, briefing books, transcripts, and issues files related to various First Minister meetings, and committee meetings surrounding the constitutional reform discussions. Many of these files were created while Peter Meekison was Minister of Alberta Federal and Inter-Governmental Affairs and relate to the amending of the Constitution Act in 1982. A set of coded files is included in this series which addresses non-Constitutional issues his Ministry was dealing with. In his capacity as constitutional adviser to the provincial government post 1984, there is material related to the Senate Reform Task Force meetings, and the constitutional committee work leading to the Meech Lake Accord discussions and the 1992 Charlottetown Accord. Included in this series are numerous constitutional background material files which provide further insight into the constitutional process and debate. The final series consists of very complete records retained by Peter Meekison in his capacity as a Commissioner on the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP). The Commission was struck in 1992, and Meekison appointed to it in 1993. Included in the records are meeting minutes and documents, Intervener Participatory Program (IPP) submissions to the Commission, reports prepared for and by the Commission; policy team records, and background and reference files. The records are in excellent physical shape and because of their completeness and the broad span of years represented, provide valuable insight into issues facing Alberta and Canada in the 1980’s and 1990’s, as well as documenting University activities during this period and earlier.

Peter Meekison fonds consists of records related to Professor Meekison's academic pursuits and his career at the University of Albera; his professional activities encompassing his research and writing files; constitutional material including Senate Reform Task Force records and Meech Lake Accord; and records of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples.

Sem títuloThe Human Rights Institute of Canada fonds contains the records of the Human Rights Institute of Canada and its founder and president, Marguerite Ritchie. The Human Rights Institute of Canada is an independent, not for profit, non-partisan research group which conducts and promotes research into issues that impede equality for Canadians, as per the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with a specific focus on women’s equality. This Institute was founded by Ottawa based lawyer, Marguerite Ritchie, a former lawyer for the Department of Justice and Vice-Chair of the Anti-Dumping Tribunal. The fundamental premise of the Institute was to provide expert legal research to the Canadian people in the same way that the Department of Justice gives legal advice to the Government of Canada. As founder and President, Marguerite Ritchie set the tone for the Institute and this fonds also contains her papers from before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada.
The materials in this fonds date from 1934 to 2013. Materials from the Human Rights Institute of Canada are from 1973 to 2013, while legal research materials date back to the 1700s. The fonds pertains predominately to Canada, with some research on the United States of America (USA), Europe, the Soviet Union (USSR), the Middle East, and Africa. With the exception of United Nations conferences and research on Israel, most of the research on other nations and regions is for a point of comparison for rights, equality, and politics.
The fonds contains three types of materials: those of Marguerite Ritchie from her personal life and career before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada, those relating to the functioning of the institute, such as administrative records, and those relating to the work of the Institute produced mainly by President Marguerite Ritchie. Documents from the work of the Human Rights Institute of Canada is the largest portion of the fonds. Materials produced by the Institute were generated mostly by the projects it was involved with, including tracking issues over the course of years and its efforts to publicise its research in the media and the government. This fonds does not contain working papers of volunteers. Function based Institute records document the Human Rights Institute of Canada’s founding, its procedures, funding, support, and organisation. Materials of founder Marguerite Ritchie contain research from her work at the Department of Justice and the Anti-Dumping Tribunal, Anti-Dumping Tribunal procedures, her personal experiences facing sexism and gender discrimination while working for the federal government. It also includes her personal research on women’s issues which she began while working for the Department of Justice and which became a life-long passion.
The Human Rights Institute of Canada addresses issues of women’s equality, human rights, the United Nations and international law, Canadian laws and equality, the functioning of government, equality in the justice system, the relationship between the federal governments and the provinces, and funding and support for the Institute. Major projects the Institute worked on to address these issues include Persons Case II, Senate reform, the Meech Lake Accord and Charlottetown Accord, status equality for aboriginal women, the Expropriation of Nanoose Bay, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the high arctic relocations, the Royal Commission on the Status of Women and following the development of the status of women, Quebec separatism, and the Official Languages Act and bilingualism. The most common document types are newspaper clippings, memorandum, correspondence, press releases, reports, legislation, House of Commons and Senate debates, committee minutes and proceedings from Parliament, promotional materials, and government publications. Newspaper clippings are mostly annotated with citations and marginalia. The fonds also contains a significant number of Dialogue magazines; Marguerite Ritchie was a long time contributor to this magazine, which publishes reader contributed articles on political and social issues from a variety of perspectives.

Peter Lougheed is a former premier of Alberta (1971-1985) who was in charge of the Progressive Conservative government in the province during an era of significant development for Alberta in relation to the energy sectors and provincial contribution to the national scene. Peter Lougheed was born in Calgary on July 26, 1928, son of Edgar and Edna Lougheed and grandson of Sir James Alexander Lougheed. He was educated in Calgary public schools, was awarded a BA. and LLB. from the University of Alberta in 1951 and 1952 respectively, and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1954, Lougheed was elected leader of a moribund Progressive Conservative party in Alberta in 1965, and went on to win a seat in the legislature in 1967, and to become premier at the head of a new Progressive Conservative government in 1971 He was premier of the province through tumultuous years of boom and bust, the development of the energy industry, and federal-provincial conflicts. Lougheed retired from politics in 1985 after winning four successive election victories. Since leaving politics, Lougheed has been partner and counsel with Bennett Jones law firm in Calgary, active in international business pursuits, and much involved in national issues of trade and constitutional reform. Today Lougheed makes his home in Calgary. He continues to be involved in business pursuits, actively supports various organizations, and speaks out on matters of public concern. These records were in Lougheed’s custody in various locations over the years. Some of the early scrapbooks and other material in the fonds was originally assembled outside Lougheed’s office and without his direction by other interested parties and given to Lougheed as part of his memorabilia collection. Originally, prior to 1971, items collected seem to have been kept in P. C. party or Official Opposition offices, but during Lougheed’s long term as premier, they were kept in his Calgary premier’s office, and after he left public office, in his law office at Bennett Jones. They were later stored at the Ranchmen’s Club and were transferred to the Lougheed House archives in 2004.
The fonds consists of quasi-personal material collected by Lougheed during the course of his political and post-political career, along with a few pertinent items saved from his pre-political life. This is essentially a collection of items chosen by Peter Lougheed (or, in the case of newsclippings, but staff under his direction) to document that part of his life which has been in the public eye since 1965, and to showcase aspects of those public achievements which gave him particular personal satisfaction, or were simply fun, In the manner of a scrapbook, this collection was always intended as a display.
The collection documents, from Lougheed’s personal point of view and from that of the mass media, his career in Progressive Conservative party politics and campaigns throughout his tenure as premier, his official activities while in public office as leader of the opposition and premier, and his ongoing service to the community and the nation since 1985.

The administrative records document Board of Directors activities, financial work, site development for various venues, correspondence, and commercial and cultural impact studies. The production records document script development, design and technical production work. In addition both Chinook and Fringe Theatres maintained scrapbooks or archives binders documenting their seasons. There are also a certain amount of school tour production records from Chinook Theatre tours. The records are predominantly textual with some original graphic design, prints, and photographs.
Sem títuloThe records in the Studio Theatre fonds span a period of more than forty years. They offer record of a long-standing and innovative working theatre deeply involved in the Edmonton arts community, as well as documenting an important component of the University of Alberta's drama department program. Studio Theatre has contributed immensely to the development of theatre in Alberta and Canada, as witnessed by the number of individuals working in theatre across the country who have participated and gained experience on the Studio Theatre stage.
The records have been arranged and described in six series, with a basic chronological order maintained within each series. There is information about almost every play produced on the Studio Theatre stage between 1949 and 1991. Information tends to be fairly skimpy for the earlier productions; a production file might only contain a program and review clipping. As the years progress, more and more information is included with the production file. Reports from technical crew heads, front of house reports, financial records and publicity clippings are routinely kept. The production books, described in Series III, often provide the most detailed and varied information about a production. These books are production scrapbooks, and include programs, reports, clippings, telegrams, related correspondence, photographs, set plans, cast lists, and much more. Usually the date given for the items, such as scripts, corresponds to the year in which the play was produced by the Phoenix Theatre. The date of the unproduced script corresponds to the year in which the playwright or artist proposed the play to the Phoenix Artistic Director. In some cases when no date appears on the proposal, the copyright date of the play is used. The administration files are organized in alphabetical order and then chronologically within the title area. Production records are organized chronologically by production. Main stage productions are listed first followed by the Second Stage, Phoenix Downtown records.
Sem títuloThe Wilfred Watson fonds span a period of over fifty years, and provide a wonderful record of the creative processes of a noted Canadian poet, playwright, teacher and literary theorist. Wilfred Watson was a writer brimming with ideas and his papers provide evidence of his creative endeavors; his numerous notebooks are filled with drafts of plays and poems, ideas for further development, excerpts from his own reading and study, sketches, and jottings about his daily activities. In addition to his notebooks, there are files of his writing drafts (encompassing the many genre he wrote in), very complete correspondence files, drawing files and sketchbooks, and supplemental material including sound recordings and photographs. The records arrived at the University of Alberta Archives in three separate deposits (the last deposit of records made after Wilfred Watson's death), with excellent listings and descriptions attached. The archivist brought the records in each of the three deposits together physically and intellectually, while retaining many of the original groupings adhered to in the first listings. The notebooks, for example, were kept chronologically by Wilfred Watson, so the notebooks from all three deposits have been pulled together and arranged in their original date order. Likewise, the correspondence in each deposit was arranged alphabetically by correspondent and in the comprehensive finding aid, all of the correspondence is together and arranged in alphabetical order. The series designations include the following eight series, and were arrived at by considering the contents of the records. Watson's notebooks are of particular research value as they provide so much information about Wilfred Watson's creative thought processes, as well as information about his teaching plans, readings, Department of English activities, and even a daily weather observation from his study window. The notebooks also held loose sheets of paper, and these have been removed for conservation purposes and placed in a separate file following the notebook they were retrieved from. The series of literary drafts and writing files is also very significant; often several different versions of a particular poem or even an entire play are present in the files. The writing files take on added significance since they provide evidence of, as Wilfred Watson was once described, "a prolific poet who publishes little." As Diane Bessai noted, Watson's plays, while given lively reviews in the daily press at the times of their first performances, "have not been widely produced since". His writing, particularly his later writing, was often considered controversial and experimetnal, and was not readily published or produced, so it is important that his work is preserved in his own archive. The correspondence files, particularly the letters between Wilfred Watson and Sheila Watson, provide another fascinating glimpse into these writers' minds. The Watsons, due to work and schooling circumstances, lived apart off and on over the years and their letters became their main link. Their letters, written regularly to one another, usually go beyond the ordinary to explore mutual ideas about writing, writers, literature, and projects they are working on in their own studies. A detailed series and file list follows, with further information provided about each of the eight series in the Wilfred Watson fonds. A subject/name index is included at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

Dr. Orrell became involved with the project in 1979, and was an active member with the Globe Rebuilding Committee through years of research, site digs, theory constructions, and the eventual rebuilding and opening of the replica Globe Theatre on the banks of the Thames River in London, England. His Globe project files are very detailed, and include annual project files, meeting minutes, correspondence with the Globe architect, Theo Crosby, and other members of the Globe ‘team’, as well as detailed architectural plans, drawings, and photographs. There are also files concerning the function of the theatre once built, including opening festivities, publicity, fund-raising, and theatre season brochures.
The Orrell fonds span his academic career, including early doctoral research files which evolved into early teaching files, with detailed notes on readings, cited references, and copies of various articles, imprint, and scholarly papers related to his fields of research interest. There is a blending between what might have been research files, and what became teaching files, but the end result if a fonds that represents his many professional activities, research interests and directions. There are University of Alberta administrative files, reflecting Orrell’s position as a long-serving faculty member and the accompanying duties this entailed. Dr. Orrell’s professional activities are also reflected in files concerning conferences and seminars attended, speeches given, and correspondence maintained with fellow academics and colleagues.
One series is devoted to his script writing activities, which includes a number of files related to a study of British television programs and scripts, undertaken during an early sabbatical year abroad. Dr. Orrell was the author of several scripts written for Canadian radio and television productions, and copies of the annotated scripts are included in this series of records.
A fairly extensive series relates to John Orrell’s research, writing and publishing activities, and again there is a blurring of lines as much of his research and writing activity is tied closely to his work with the Globe Theatre project. This series is organized into several sub-series to better facilitate access to its many components.
Only a few files concern Professor Orrell’s personal life, and these are described in a small series. A final series describes the extensive photograph holdings, although a more detailed description to the photographs will be prepared at a later date.
