William Rowan's papers consist of correspondence, field diaries, sketches, research notes, teaching materials and observations in Zoology (especially in ornithology) from 1908 to 1957. The manuscripts of his published and unpublished books, and of his speeches and writings on scientific and social matters, are an important part of the papers. Professor Rowan pioneered research in migration patterns and corresponded with major scientific figures across North America, Great Britain, and the European Continent. Recognized as a talented scientific artist he designed the whooping crane stamp for the Canada Post Office in 1954. His zoological designs also originated from his work in the Canadian and international conservation movement. His speeches, radio talks and writing reflect his interest in world political matters and the nuclear age. The Rowan family members wrote often and at length to each other. Their letters include their observation of local, national and international affairs from 1908 to 1957.

The Chancellor and Senate fonds are among the oldest and most significant records in the University of Alberta Archives. These records document the very inception of the University when through the University of Alberta Act in 1906, the Senate was created as the sole governing body of the University of Alberta. At its first meeting in March 1908, the Senate set the policy for the opening of the University in September 1908. The focus and mandate of the Senate has changed in the ensuing years, but it remains an important component of the University landscape. The Senate represents the public face of the University, and functions with the understanding that "an ongoing relationship with the community is fundamental to the effectiveness of the University." The Chancellor and Senate records deposited with the University Archives span the period from the Senate's establishment as the governing body of the University, to its present functions within the University milieu. These records were received in numerous accessions over the past years, and although physically dispersed, are brought together intellectually in this comprehensive finding-aid to the fonds.

The records have been arranged within three broad series, and further arranged according to sub-series designations as well. Series 1 is the Chancellor and Senate Office administrative records, and include the Executive Officer files; Senate Office files related to Senate membership, correspondence, public relations, and financial matters; and Senate meetings. The meeting files are extensive, and fairly complete in terms of years represented. Early Senate meeting minutes were recorded in bound minute books and are complete from 1903 through 1970. Beginning in 1949, individual meeting files were maintained and contain agendas, minutes, related correspondence, and printed attachments related to specific Senate meetings. The Series 1 records present an excellent overall view of the day-to-day function of the Senate, and document its evolving role within the University of Alberta.

Series 2 records represent the Operational records of the Chancellor and Senate, and include those records related to the research and gathering of information, and the public presentation of this gathered knowledge. Sub-series within this broad series include Reports (usually ones presented to the Senate); Committees; Task Forces; and Hearings/Investigations/Commissions. The records are often quite linked within these sub-series; for example, an Ad Hoc Committee might be struck to consider a specific issue or topic, and this in turn may lead to the establishment of a task force to further develop and explore the topic, as well as prepare a comprehensive report on the findings. The Committee files document activities of the Senate standing committees and ad hoc committees, as well as joint University-wide committees with Senate representation. A particularly significant Senate activity involves the conferring of honorary degrees, and the Honorary Degree Committee files provide a wealth of information about the recipients of these degrees. Their files often contain biographical information about the recipient, nominating papers, photographs, and related correspondence. As the Chancellor is involved with all convocations, the Convocation Committee files also present a variety of information related to honorary degrees specifically, and convocation generally. There are often convocation programs, speeches, invitations, and planning documents. Within the Task Force sub-series, records concerning twenty-five task force investigations are represented, and arranged in their chronological order of establishment within the finding aid. The fourth sub-series of Hearings/Commissions/Investigations is a smaller set of records, and relates to broader University and public wide inquiries.

The final series of records relates to the Chancellors' papers. While information about the role of the Chancellor can be gleaned from all three series of records, this particular series focuses on the role of individual chancellors. Sub-series include Chancellor Installation ceremonies; Chancellor meetings; photographs; and the papers of individual Chancellors. The series is limited in that only nine individual Chancellors are represented (18 Chancellors have served the University between 1908 and 2008), and some of this information is sketchy and limited in scope. However, further information about individual Chancellors can be researched by consulting their private paper donations, or considering the correspondence files in Series 1.

The Chancellor and Senate fonds form a significant contribution to the documentation of the history and ongoing activities of the University of Alberta.

The C.S. Burgess fonds documents Burgess's administrative and professional activities from 1891 through 1971; he removed most remaining personal records before donating material to the Unviersity Archives. The records reflect Burgess's progess as a designer and the evolution of his design interests from his architectural articling and design studies in Scotland, England and his European study tours, to his professional consultation work and teaching in Canada beginning in Montréal and concluding with his tenure as a professor of architecture at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. A small portion of the records document Burgess's work as a private consultant for public and private groups across Alberta. The records include lecture and public speaking notes on art, history and design; professional correspondence; design portfolios in various media from both his student and professional periods; photographs predominantly of his professional work with some of private acquaintances; a collection of postcards, maps and other art and design related ephemera.

The fonds consists primarily of administrative files and scripts from 1983 to 1994. While the bulk of the records are textual, the fonds also contain some production photographs, posters, promotional materials and set designs.

Most of the administrative files were originally in alphabetical order within a specific time period. The files are organized into descriptive series which include administration, audience surveys, finances, fund raising, physical plant, production files, publicity, subscriptions, contracts, posters, photographs, and other theatres’ publicity materials. Usually the date given for the items, such as scripts, corresponds to the year in which the play was produced by the Nexus Theatre. The date of the unproduced script corresponds to the year in which the playwright or artist proposed the play to the Nexus Artistic Director. In some cases when no date appears on the proposal, the copyright date of the play is used.

Fonds consist of records detailing the academic career of John Overton Orrell, with the bulk of the records concentrating on his academic research related to the Globe Theatre rebuilding project. Dr. Orrell became involved with the project in 1979, and was an active member with the Globe Rebuilding Committee through years of research, site digs, theory constructions, and the eventual rebuilding and opening of the replica Globe Theatre on the banks of the Thames River in London, England. His Globe project files are very detailed, and include annual project files, meeting minutes, correspondence with the Globe architect, Theo Crosby, and other members of the Globe ‘team’, as well as detailed architectural plans, drawings, and photographs. There are also files concerning the function of the theatre once built, including opening festivities, publicity, fund-raising, and theatre season brochures.

The Orrell fonds span his academic career, including early doctoral research files which evolved into early teaching files, with detailed notes on readings, cited references, and copies of various articles, imprint, and scholarly papers related to his fields of research interest. There is a blending between what might have been research files, and what became teaching files, but the end result if a fonds that represents his many professional activities, research interests and directions. There are University of Alberta administrative files, reflecting Orrell’s position as a long-serving faculty member and the accompanying duties this entailed. Dr. Orrell’s professional activities are also reflected in files concerning conferences and seminars attended, speeches given, and correspondence maintained with fellow academics and colleagues.

One series is devoted to his script writing activities, which includes a number of files related to a study of British television programs and scripts, undertaken during an early sabbatical year abroad. Dr. Orrell was the author of several scripts written for Canadian radio and television productions, and copies of the annotated scripts are included in this series of records.

A fairly extensive series relates to John Orrell’s research, writing and publishing activities, and again there is a blurring of lines as much of his research and writing activity is tied closely to his work with the Globe Theatre project. This series is organized into several sub-series to better facilitate access to its many components.

Only a few files concern Professor Orrell’s personal life, and these are described in a small series. A final series describes the extensive photograph holdings, although a more detailed description to the photographs will be prepared at a later date.

The Wilfred Watson fonds span a period of over fifty years, and provide a wonderful record of the creative processes of a noted Canadian poet, playwright, teacher and literary theorist. Wilfred Watson was a writer brimming with ideas and his papers provide evidence of his creative endeavors; his numerous notebooks are filled with drafts of plays and poems, ideas for further development, excerpts from his own reading and study, sketches, and jottings about his daily activities. In addition to his notebooks, there are files of his writing drafts (encompassing the many genre he wrote in), very complete correspondence files, drawing files and sketchbooks, and supplemental material including sound recordings and photographs. The records arrived at the University of Alberta Archives in three separate deposits (the last deposit of records made after Wilfred Watson's death), with excellent listings and descriptions attached. The archivist brought the records in each of the three deposits together physically and intellectually, while retaining many of the original groupings adhered to in the first listings. The notebooks, for example, were kept chronologically by Wilfred Watson, so the notebooks from all three deposits have been pulled together and arranged in their original date order. Likewise, the correspondence in each deposit was arranged alphabetically by correspondent and in the comprehensive finding aid, all of the correspondence is together and arranged in alphabetical order. The series designations include the following eight series, and were arrived at by considering the contents of the records. Watson's notebooks are of particular research value as they provide so much information about Wilfred Watson's creative thought processes, as well as information about his teaching plans, readings, Department of English activities, and even a daily weather observation from his study window. The notebooks also held loose sheets of paper, and these have been removed for conservation purposes and placed in a separate file following the notebook they were retrieved from. The series of literary drafts and writing files is also very significant; often several different versions of a particular poem or even an entire play are present in the files. The writing files take on added significance since they provide evidence of, as Wilfred Watson was once described, "a prolific poet who publishes little." As Diane Bessai noted, Watson's plays, while given lively reviews in the daily press at the times of their first performances, "have not been widely produced since". His writing, particularly his later writing, was often considered controversial and experimetnal, and was not readily published or produced, so it is important that his work is preserved in his own archive. The correspondence files, particularly the letters between Wilfred Watson and Sheila Watson, provide another fascinating glimpse into these writers' minds. The Watsons, due to work and schooling circumstances, lived apart off and on over the years and their letters became their main link. Their letters, written regularly to one another, usually go beyond the ordinary to explore mutual ideas about writing, writers, literature, and projects they are working on in their own studies. A detailed series and file list follows, with further information provided about each of the eight series in the Wilfred Watson fonds. A subject/name index is included at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

There is also a residue of material from Theatre 3 dating from 1978. The bulk of the records are textual, the fonds also contains production photographs, posters, promotional materials, set designs and audio/visual materials.

Each file is given a descriptive title with a box number, file number and date listed. Usually the date given for the items, such as scripts, corresponds to the year in which the play was produced by the Phoenix Theatre. The date of the unproduced script corresponds to the year in which the playwright or artist proposed the play to the Phoenix Artistic Director. In some cases when no date appears on the proposal, the copyright date of the play is used. The administration files are organized in alphabetical order and then chronologically within the title area. Production records are organized chronologically by production. Main stage productions are listed first followed by the Second Stage, Phoenix Downtown records.

The Chinook Theatre/Fringe Theatre Adventures' records consist of administrative and production files from 1980 through 1995. The administrative records document Board of Directors activities, financial work, site development for various venues, correspondence, and commercial and cultural impact studies. The production records document script development, design and technical production work. In addition both Chinook and Fringe Theatres maintained scrapbooks or archives binders documenting their seasons. There are also a certain amount of school tour production records from Chinook Theatre tours. The records are predominantly textual with some original graphic design, prints, and photographs.

This multiple media fonds consists of personal and professional correspondence; research and reference materials (original, printed, and photocopied); field and other notebooks; published and hand-drawn maps; microforms; audio and video tapes of individuals and research topics; computer disks and diskettes; drawings and sketches; and photographic negatives and prints. Records include the Sandy Lake, Red Lake, and Round Lake research projects, and the Metis genealogical study. Some of the material is the creation of Mary's husband E.S. Rogers, and some is their joint research.

The Human Rights Institute of Canada fonds contains the records of the Human Rights Institute of Canada and its founder and president, Marguerite Ritchie. The Human Rights Institute of Canada is an independent, not for profit, non-partisan research group which conducts and promotes research into issues that impede equality for Canadians, as per the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with a specific focus on women’s equality. This Institute was founded by Ottawa based lawyer, Marguerite Ritchie, a former lawyer for the Department of Justice and Vice-Chair of the Anti-Dumping Tribunal. The fundamental premise of the Institute was to provide expert legal research to the Canadian people in the same way that the Department of Justice gives legal advice to the Government of Canada. As founder and President, Marguerite Ritchie set the tone for the Institute and this fonds also contains her papers from before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada.

The materials in this fonds date from 1934 to 2013. Materials from the Human Rights Institute of Canada are from 1973 to 2013, while legal research materials date back to the 1700s. The fonds pertains predominately to Canada, with some research on the United States of America (USA), Europe, the Soviet Union (USSR), the Middle East, and Africa. With the exception of United Nations conferences and research on Israel, most of the research on other nations and regions is for a point of comparison for rights, equality, and politics.

The fonds contains three types of materials: those of Marguerite Ritchie from her personal life and career before she founded the Human Rights Institute of Canada, those relating to the functioning of the institute, such as administrative records, and those relating to the work of the Institute produced mainly by President Marguerite Ritchie. Documents from the work of the Human Rights Institute of Canada is the largest portion of the fonds. Materials produced by the Institute were generated mostly by the projects it was involved with, including tracking issues over the course of years and its efforts to publicise its research in the media and the government. This fonds does not contain working papers of volunteers. Function based Institute records document the Human Rights Institute of Canada’s founding, its procedures, funding, support, and organisation. Materials of founder Marguerite Ritchie contain research from her work at the Department of Justice and the Anti-Dumping Tribunal, Anti-Dumping Tribunal procedures, her personal experiences facing sexism and gender discrimination while working for the federal government. It also includes her personal research on women’s issues which she began while working for the Department of Justice and which became a life-long passion.

The Human Rights Institute of Canada addresses issues of women’s equality, human rights, the United Nations and international law, Canadian laws and equality, the functioning of government, equality in the justice system, the relationship between the federal governments and the provinces, and funding and support for the Institute. Major projects the Institute worked on to address these issues include Persons Case II, Senate reform, the Meech Lake Accord and Charlottetown Accord, status equality for aboriginal women, the Expropriation of Nanoose Bay, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and the high arctic relocations, the Royal Commission on the Status of Women and following the development of the status of women, Quebec separatism, and the Official Languages Act and bilingualism. The most common document types are newspaper clippings, memorandum, correspondence, press releases, reports, legislation, House of Commons and Senate debates, committee minutes and proceedings from Parliament, promotional materials, and government publications. Newspaper clippings are mostly annotated with citations and marginalia. The fonds also contains a significant number of Dialogue magazines; Marguerite Ritchie was a long time contributor to this magazine, which publishes reader contributed articles on political and social issues from a variety of perspectives.

The A.C. Rutherford fonds consists predominantly of incoming correspondence concerning his years as Premier of Alberta. The documents are typed and handwritten and are generally arranged in their original chronological order.

The Romanet papers consist of correspondence, notebooks and reports on the fur trade, and the manuscripts of Kabluk of the Eskimo including several revisions. When the collection was received by the Archives in 1972, only a small part was preserved in Louis Romanets own meticulous arrangement. Care has been taken to maintain these files in their original order; but it was necessary to sort and arrange the bulk of the collection to define Romanet's career. One of the journals he composed during his first winter in Canada exists only as a carbon copy on tissue sheets. It is so fragile that a transcription has been made for the use of researchers. The 860 photographs in the collection depict the Hudson's Bay Company's employees, trading posts, and stern-wheel steamships; the native population of Northern Canada including the Arctic Islands; and the Romanet family. Almost 100 of the photographs were collected from Government and Hudsons Bay Company sources to illustrate Kabluk of the Eskimo, although only sixteen were used in the published version. A descriptive inventory was prepared in 1975. This inventory was revised and reprinted in 1997, however, the physical arrangement of the fonds was not altered.
