A mounted photograph of a returning [Manitoban?] soldier dressed in a South African [Boer] War uniform and slouch hat. The soldier is also wearing a bandolier and holding a rifle. The medal pinned to the soldier's chest closely resembles and is possibly the Queen's South Africa Medal, the campaign medal awarded to those who served in the Boer War.

Handwritten letter from Flora Steele at St. Urban's Academy in Montreal to her father in Winnipeg. Flora comments on her father's letter, mentioning her father's father. She has met a Lord Strathcona's veteran, Mr. John Barry, who served with Sam in South Africa, and she asks about Lord Milner. 3 pp.

A separated imprint page from a book, with an article on "Distinguished Colonial Soldiers"; includes a write up of Colonel L.W. Herchmer and Colonel S.B. Steele; this was written at the time when Steele was to be second-in-command to Herchmer with the command of the Canadian Mounted Rifles.
