UAA Fonds 0165 · Fonds · 1966-1990

The Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative (ACHC) fonds document the history and function of the Cooperative, and its predecessor, the Campus Co-operative Association. The records span the years from the inception of the Co-operative in 1967, through its existence 21 years later when the records to that date were deposited with the University of Alberta Archives.

The records, largely textual, required a fair amount of sorting when received at the Archives. Papers were removed from binders, and duplicate records disposed. There was a lot of duplication of records, as individual executive members along with each ‘house’ in the Cooperative maintained a set of minutes, audited financial statements, policies and procedures manuals, along with forms for completing maintenance checks and house inventories. As well, the collection was weeded of financial ephemera (invoices, returned cheques, bills, etc) since summary financial records existed. An original listing provided by a then member of the ACHC aided the arrangement and description process.

The records have been sorted into ten series, including: the Cooperative Movement; Executive Committee Records; Minutes (Board and General); Financial Records; Membership Records, Property Management Records; Property Expansion Records; Legal Advice Records; Historic Records; and the Newsletter (The Cooper). Some of the series are very small, while others like the Financial records series and Property Management records series are necessarily arranged into sub-series to better organize the material. There is a complete set of minutes from the 1960s through to January of 1987. Membership records are particularly complete for the mid-1970s to the early 1980s; earlier membership records, particularly for the 1960s, are sketchier. The records are in good physical shape.

The Assiniboia Community Housing Cooperative records reflect an interesting alternative to standard student housing arrangements available on the University of Alberta campus in the mid-1960’s. It was, writes Rod Olstad in a 1988 Gateway article, “the first organized, yet unofficial, co-ed housing at the U of A.” Principles of democracy were essential to the Cooperative, with their elected executive, membership votes on all matters of house policy and operation, and safeguards to protect individual members from potential financial liability, etc. Co-op members were instrumental in lobbying the University in 1973 to abandon plans to demolish much of the low-cost housing in the North Garneau neighbourhood, demanding instead that this housing be retained and renovated to ensure that low-cost, alternative housing was available for students.

The ACHC records can also be viewed as a part of the larger national Co-operative housing movement emerging in the same period. The unique living arrangement that is the Cooperative, with its accompanying problems and triumphs, is well documented in these records.

Phoenix Theatre fonds
UAA Fonds 0428 · Fonds · 1978-2009

The records consist primarily of administrative files and production files from 1983 to 1997 with gaps from the 1981/82 to 1986/87 seasons. There is also a residue of material from Theatre 3 dating from 1978. The bulk of the records are textual, the fonds also contains production photographs, posters, promotional materials, set designs and audio/visual materials.

The records are organized into thirteen series: administrative files, production files, promotional files, reviews and articles, subscriptions, technical resources, contracts, photographs, posters, design sketches, publicity, oversize, and audio/visual materials. Each file is given a descriptive title with a box number, file number and date listed. Usually the date given for the items, such as scripts, corresponds to the year in which the play was produced by the Phoenix Theatre. The date of the unproduced script corresponds to the year in which the playwright or artist proposed the play to the Phoenix Artistic Director. In some cases when no date appears on the proposal, the copyright date of the play is used. The administration files are organized in alphabetical order and then chronologically within the title area. Production records are organized chronologically by production. Main stage productions are listed first followed by the Second Stage, Phoenix Downtown records.

Mixed Chorus fonds
UAA Fonds 0201 · Fonds · 1944-1989

The University of Alberta Mixed Chorus fonds housed in the University Archives span a period of more than forty years, and provide a valuable record of a long-standing University organization (approaching its 60th anniversary of operation). The Mixed Chorus was, and remains, an active contributor to University society, as well as the broader surrounding community because of its annual province-wide concerts and related public appearances. The Chorus is significant to the history of the development of choral music in Alberta, and its individual members and directors contributors in their own right to the province's musical growth.

The records have been arranged and described in two broad series and several sub-headings, with a basic chronological order maintained within each series. The textual files provide information about the early years of the Chorus' existence, particularly the years from 1946 to about 1971. Files maintained by the executive and directors (Richard Eaton and James Whittle) are significant for the information they provide about the Chorus' yearly operations and activities. Information in the files after the Whittle years is sketchier, and more incidental in nature. The textual files include correspondence, clippings, some meeting minutes, membership lists, the organization's constitution, and evidence of the planning and fundraising required to orchestrate the annual UAMC Spring Tour.

Series 1 consists of the Executive/Director files with sub-series providing information about membership; social activities, commemorative/historical records, and publicity and promotion files. Correspondence to and from members of the executive was filed together (in the form of scrapbooks in the 1940's), with correspondence maintained by the Chorus director. Where possible, the original order of the files was maintained, while the series and sub-series titles were assigned by the archivist to reflect the record function.

Series 2 is the Performance-related records, comprised of printed programs, sound recordings, and photographs. As noted earlier, the sound recordings form the largest component of the Mixed Chorus fonds. They include both taped recordings (cassette and reel-to-reel) as well as disc recordings. The photographs, numbering over 1200 in quantity, include prints, negatives, and a few transparencies and contact sheets. While the photographs do vary in quality, they provide important documentation of Mixed Chorus performances, social activities, and tours. There are excellent images of the Chorus's 40th anniversary activities taken by Hal Kinsey, as well as the annual formal photographs of the Mixed Chorus. Various alumni have sent copies of their personal photographs to the Mixed Chorus executive, adding to the views of the annual Spring tours, and various Chorus social events.

The records do not extend beyond the 1980's, but future accessions from the University of Alberta Mixed Chorus are anticipated. The Mixed Chorus records provide a profile of an aspect of the non-academic life of the University of Alberta student community, as well as make a valuable contribution to musical/performing arts history documentation for both the University of Alberta, and the Province of Alberta.
