Nettilling Lake Inuit Cairn

Photograph depicts Akatuga (Soper's assistant) standing by an old Inuit rock cairn near the southern sector of Nettilling Lake. Soper and his party spent five months in the Nettilling Lake area, surveying its topography, mapping the lake and surrounding area, and collecting animal and plant specimens for the Victoria Memorial (later National) Museum of Ottawa.

Photograph depicts Soper and R.C.M.P. Constable Thomas Tredgold standing by a cairn they built to mark their progress at the Koukdjuak River camp. Soper painted their initials and date on the bottom bolder, a Union Jack flag is draped on the side of the cairn, and white crosses are painted on the higher bolders. Soper and Tredgold spent five months in the Nettilling Lake area, surveying and gathering information for the National Museum and the R.C.M.P.

Photograph depicts the residence of the Hudson's Bay Company Post Manager, David Wark, at Amadjuak Bay. Soper rested and restocked food here for about two weeks, before continuing his journey to Cape Dorset on Foxe Peninsula. Soper's native assistants, Akatuga and Newkega, turned back for Pangnirtung at this point.
