Biographical history
Dr. Ross William Collins was born in 1892 in Port William, Nova Scotia, Canada. He attended Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1912 and Masters in 1914. Collins also studied theology at Pine Hill Theological College in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Union Theological Seminary in New York City, New York. In 1918 he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree. He then attended Columbia University for his Ph.D. in history, which he completed in 1923.
Collins taught in the department of history at the University of Syracuse before accepting a position at the University of Alberta (U of A) in 1930. Collins was the head of the department of history a the U of A until his retirement in 1959. He became a professor emeritus at the U of A.
Collins was married to his wife Margaret and had three children. Collins passed away in 1964 at the age of 72. The U of A created the Ross William Collins Memorial Book Prize in his honour which is to be awarded to students of outstanding merit in Renaissance and Reformation History.
