Biographical history

George Abel Rothrock was born to George Abel Rothrock Sr. and Marian Adele Titter Rothrock on November 11, 1932 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware, and he went to the University of Minnesota and received M.A. in 1956, PhD in 1958. Under the supervision of John Baptist Wolf, he finished his PhD dissertation titled: The French Crown and the Estates General of 1614. He then moved to France to do postdoctoral research at the University of Grenoble, Grenoble, France.

Dr. Rothrock started his teaching career at the University of Omaha, where he taught from 1958 to 1962. Between 1962 and 1963, Rothrock worked at the University of Michigan. He moved to Canada in 1963 to start teaching at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1964, Dr. Rothrock joined the University of Alberta as a Associate Professor in the History Department. He earned his full professorship in 1971 and retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1992. During his career as an European History Professor, Dr. Rothrock’s research focused on the military history of early modern Europe and the Ancien Régime in France. His publications include: Europe: A Brief History; The Huguenots: A Biography of A Minority; Soldier of France, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban: 1633–1707. Dr. Rothrock died on April 3, 1993 in Edmonton, Alberta.
