Biographical history

Jean Kautz Lauber earned an AB degree from Whitman College, followed by an MA from Washington State University. She also earned a PhD from the University of New Mexico in 1958. Lauber joined the Department of Zoology at the University of Alberta in 1965 and retired in 1990, earning the title of professor emeritus. Lauber’s research and publications focused on myopia and blindness in birds and other animals.

Lauber also worked in administration at the U of A, holding the position of Associate Vice President (Academic) from 1976-1980. In this position, she was responsible for women’s affairs and led a committee to investigate salary discrepancies between men and women. She was involved in several projects aimed at reducing stereotyping and discrimination against women and girls in education. Lauber was the first president of the Academic Women’s Association at the U of A, and was awarded the Woman of the Year Award by the association in 1993/1994.

Lauber had three children with her husband John. She passed away in 2000.
