Administrative history

Bruce Peel Special Collections (BPSC) at the University of Alberta was founded in 1964. Its namesake is Bruce Braden Peel, Chief Librarian at the University of Alberta from 1955 to 1982. It was originally called the “Rare Book Room.” Before it was established the U of A library had most of its holdings on open stacks. The decision was made to then separate some of the older and more expensive publications to a more secure and protected area. Dorothy Hamilton, who was the previous head of the Reference Department, curated and managed the rare book room.

Upon its establishment the Library Committee set up a special fund of $50,000 for purchasing special collections. This amount increased in 1965 to $100,000. These funds allow for the U of A to acquire many rare books and archival materials.

BPSC is a climate controlled and secure closed stack library in order to best preserve it’s materials. Researchers can view materials in it’s supervised Gregory Javitch Reading Room. BPSC is home to more than a hundred thousand rare books and archival collections. It is currently located in the basement of Rutherford South building on the U of A north campus.
