Administrative history
The School of Library Science was founded in 1968, and the first Bachelor of Library Science (BLS) degrees were awarded in 1969. Sarah Rebecca Reed was the first director of the school. In 1970, the school became accredited by the American Library Association. The school has been regularly reaccredited since then. The Master of Library Science (MLS) program began in 1971.
In 1975, the school was renamed the Faculty of Library Science. Mary E.P. (Betty) Henderson was the first dean of this faculty. The degrees offered by the Faculty were reorganized in 1976 and the BLS and MLS degrees were replaced by a two-year MLS degree. The faculty was renamed again in 1988 to the Faculty of Library and Information Studies, and in 1991, it joined the Faculty of Education and became the School of Library and Information Studies. The MLS was renamed the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) in 1988 as well. The first PhD in Library and Information Studies was granted in 1991.
The school’s MLIS program has also been offered online since 2013. This made it easier for the school to transition to an entirely online model during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The school offers two combined degrees: a combined MLIS and MA in Humanities Computing (since 2003); and a combined MLIS and MBA (since 2014).
