Administrative history
The Stage Polaris Academy of Drama was a theatre company offering drama and musical theatre courses in Edmonton for students aged five to adult. It was founded by Les Bland and Susan Woywitka, and was operated by a board of directors. The Academy provided theatre space, costumes, lights and make-up. Classrooms were originally located in the Old King Edward School (8525 101st Street), with a later move to the Edmonton Catholic School Board’s former St. Margaret school in the mid-1990s.
In 1992, programs included Drama Magic for ages five to eight, Theatre Arts for ages eight to 13, and Teen Drama and Adult Drama for those wanting an introduction to acting. Musical Theatre classes for ages nine to 12, 13 to 17, and adults provided instruction in singing, acting, and dancing. Special ten-week workshops for students aged 10 to adult introduced students to acting techniques, auditioning and characterization for film. Advanced classes were by invitation or audition only, including Advanced Theatre Arts for students aged eight to 14, and Stage Polaris Young Company, a production-oriented course for ages 15 to 22.
Stage Polaris folded in November 1999 due to financial difficulties.
