Administrative history

The Salon d’histoire de la francophonie albertaine was founded in 1974 by two professors from the University of Alberta: Sister Alice Trottier of the Collège universitaire Saint-Jean (now Campus Saint-Jean) and Kenneth J. Munro from the department of history. From its inception, the Salon d’histoire aimed to bring more awareness to the history of Franco-Albertans. Its goal was to allow Franco-Albertans, particularly those in Edmonton, to learn more about their local history and consequently get to know more about each other. Since its foundation, the Salon organized several talks and conferences, a round table and a symposium regarding the 50th anniversary of the journal La Survivance. These events dealt with topics such as Franco-Albertan history, French theatre in Edmonton, l’ACFA, politics, education, the work of father Lacombe, and more. The Salon also published various books from various authors as well as information bulletins for community members.
