General note
Earliest portrait of S.B.S. Steele in his NWMP uniform. A head and shoulders shot. Inscription on verso, written by Harwood Steele: "Major-General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, K.C.M.G., C.B., M.V.O., former Superintendent, North-West Mounted Police. This photograph is especially interesting as it is a reproduction of one taken at Winnipeg in 1873 or 1874 when Steele was just beginning his N.W.M.P. Service as Sergeant-Major of 'A' Division of the Originals, at 22 years of age. The photo is also the earliest now existing." [Harwood's estimation of Steele's age, is probably incorrect here - more likely SBS is still a member of militia when this photograph was taken]; Photographer unknown.
