        History

        Kenneth William Neatby was born on March 30, 1900 in Sutton, Surrey, England. In 1906 his family relocated to Saskatchewan, Canada. Neatby is the son of Ada Deborah (nee Fisher) and Andrew Mosforth Neatby, a doctor, and brother of Hilda Neatby.

        Neatby completed his BSA in 1924 and his MSA in 1926 from the University of Saskatchewan. In 1931 he received his PhD from the University of Manitoba before taking part in post-doctoral research at Cambridge University in England.

        In 1926 Neatby joined the Winnipeg rust laboratory, Dominion Rust Research Laboratory as a cereal specialist. In 1933 he discovered how to forecast rust resistance in new wheat hybrids. In 1935 Neatby went on to teach at the University of Alberta (U of A) from 1935 to 1940, where he was head of the Department of Field Crops. He also spent the years 1940 to 1946 as the Director of the Farm Service with North West Line Elevators Association in Winnipeg. In 1946 Neatby became the director of Science Services for the Canadian Department of Agriculture. Neatby worked for the department until 1958. During his time as director the department doubled in size and the budget tripled. To commemorate his work for the department the K.W. Neatby Research Building at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa was named in his honour and houses 125 laboratories.

        Neatby was also a member of several associations including the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the American Genetic Association, the Western Society of Agronomics, and the Agricultural Institute of Canada. In 1933 he was made Fellow of the US National Research Council, in 1947 Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and in 1949 Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada.

        Neatby was awarded two honourary degrees; a Doctor of Laws (LLD honoris causa) form the U of A in 1948 and Doctor of Science (DSc honoris causa) from the University of Manitoba in 1956.

        In 1926 Neatby married Mary Smith Lynn and together they had one son, Andrew Mills. Neatby passed away on October 27, 1958 in Canada.
