Series 3 Photographs and Postcards

Series documents some of the travels of Pocock and consists of photographs, postcards, and negatives. Images are primarily of the Canadian North-West along with portraits of Pocock and others, and photos of Mexico, Canadian Prairies, and Noway. Images were either taken by Pocock or purchased during his travels and usually correlate to the places he visited, as documented through his scrapbooks, diaries, and published autobiographies. Series is arranged chronologically into nine subseries: Portraits, Images of British Columbia, Journey from Fort Macleod to Mexico City, Journey with Randle Cecil, Images of the Canadian Prairies, Journey to Spitzbergen, Images used in Chorus to Adventurers, Semi-Retirement at Charterhouse, and Trip to Canada.

A small collection of materials related to G.F. Landon, a carpenter and builder in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The first item is a photograph of a group of five men standing in a room and holding various carpentry tools. The next two items are advertisement cards. The location of the office is listed on both advertisement cards as 64 Fort St. The first card has a big red circle on the front that lists their telephone number as 172 and has a list of Manitoba legislature members on the back along with their constituency and political status. The second card advertises G.F. Landon’s services such as house-building, estimates given, additions, alterations, and repairs, and general carpentry work, and there is a list of towns and their distances from Winnipeg, Manitoba on the back.

A B&W photograph of a massive miniature model of The Holy Land with two American flags hanging beside it. A sign in the background of the photograph indicates the model in a masonic hall in Detroit, Michigan. The caption on the photograph states that the model is made up of about 60,00,000 pieces and 1100 electrically moving figures. The model was created in Edmonton, Alberta by the Gauci Brothers Builders. They started building the model in 1914 and it took them around 10 years to complete. In the top right corner of the photograph is a composite photograph of the faces of the two brothers and their names captioned underneath. Joseph W. Gauci was the originator and designer, and Salvator Gauci was the mechanical supervisor. The model was so popular that it toured around Canada and the United States of America for nearly 40 years.

A sepia-toned photograph of an aen charet, or Red River cart, pulled by a horse and stopped in front of a clothing store. A First Nations man is standing behind the horse while holding a rifle, a child is standing in the cart, and a woman is standing behind the cart with her arm on the child's shoulder. Several white men are watching from the boardwalk, one of them holding a child. Location and date estimate are dealer-provided.

3.5 Images of the Canadian Prairies [ca. 1913]

Subseries consists of photographs of unidentified people and places on the Canadian Prairies. It is unclear when these photographs were taken but the majority may have been created around the time of Pocock and Cecil's 1913 journey as they were crossing the Canada by train from New York to Calgary. One photograph was likely taken around 1890 as the style of it matches those in Pocock's 1890 scrapbook. Subseries is arranged according the order that photographs were processed.

The card was written in Edmonton, Alberta on January 1, 1895. The photograph was taken by Charles W. Mathers in Edmonton, Alberta. The handwriting on the back, which is barely legible, reads “ À notre bonne maman avec les meilleurs souhaites de bonne année, Sérénine & Eugénie. Edmonton, Alberta, 1e Janvier 1895” which translates to “To our good mother with best wishes for a Happy New Year, Sérénine & Eugénie. Edmonton, Alberta, January 1, 1895.”

He set forth from Fort MacLeod on 28 June 1899 and arrived in Mexico City 21 January 1900. Photographs were likely collected by Pocock during his travels. The letter is from Letellier, Manitoba and dated May 5, 1931. It is signed by Ed Comeault, great great grandfather of professional hockey players Owen Pickering and Denton Mateychuk. Addressed to J. E. Evans Esq. in Walsingham, Ontario and requesting hockey cards to be made from a submitted portrait of the team. It is written on a thick, cloth-like sheet of paper.
Five of the images from Victoria Beach have been developed as postcards, including the dog and snowy house scenes.

A few exceptions to this theme include 3 photo postcards depicting "Ox-team at Fort Benton", "Jerk Line Mule Train" and "Walls of Old Fort Benton" at Fort Benton [Montana], and "A Serious Case of Gold Fever" - a photographic print of a woman and boy mining for gold at Nome Beach [Alaska] attributed to photographer Eric A. Hegg. Additionally, a full-colour photo postcard depicting the burning of the sternwheelers Casca and Whitehorse on the Yukon River, attributed to photographer George Tumpach, is significantly newer, as it depicts an event that took place in 1974.

An additional series of 7 similar photographs on mounts with gilt borders is present. 6 images show Doukhobors on pilgrimage, 2 of which are captioned "Line of Pilgrims (Fort Pelly)" and "Returning from the Pilgrimage (Fort Pelly)"; remaining 1 image shows two Doukhobor women in traditional clothing, captioned "In Holiday Attire".

PE002731 - "Homes for Millions" immigration enticement publication for Western Canada; [1904]

A booklet provided by the Government of the Dominion of Canada containing photographs, maps, and predominantly agricultural information intending to encourage settlement in the western provinces. Published prior to 1905 and the present-day provincial configuration, the maps display boundaries for the territories of Assiniboia, Athabasca, Mackenzie, Franklin, Keewatin, and Ungava. The title reads "Homes for Millions in Western Canada's Vast Agricultural Domain of Virgin Opportunity and Infinite Resources."

A sepia-toned photograph of a group of men and three horse-drawn wagons in front of a stable in Banff, Alberta, dated August, 1904. The caption, written by Theo. J. Childs(?), names everyone in the picture and gives some information. Most of them are "bronco busters." He also mentions his "log shack" and "Vermillion Mountain" in the background.

A photograph of the moment Alberta became a province on September 1, 1905 at noon in Edmonton. A large crowd is gathered around a stage where Lieutenant-Governor George H. V. Bulyea is signing the official register. Attached to the back is a page containing "Some Facts About This Picture" which consists of an aggressive sales pitch on why you need to own a copy of this picture "should you be a true citizen of Alberta."

An immigration enticement publication issued by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company that includes information on "farming, mining, lumbering, ranching, and fruit growing" in the province of British Columbia. A fold-out map is tipped in before the first page "showing the lines of the Canadian Pacific Railway" in southern B.C. and Alberta, and includes some of northern Washington and Montana. Another map printed on the inside of the front cover shows the C.P.R. across Canada, and another closer view of the area around Ottawa, Ontario showing "Eastern lines and connections," dated February 2, 1905. The name C. Green is handwritten on the top of both front and back covers, as well as on page 5 and dated September 4, 1908.
