PE002163 - Lorne Louis Anderson archive; 1945-1961

The personal papers of Lorne Louis Anderson Esq., a legal surveyor and engineer from Ontario. He served with the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II where he began training as a surveyor, and later completed a degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto. In 1950 he was "engaged in subdivision surveys on Indian Reserves in Saskatchewan and Alberta" and assisted with "mineral claim surveys in Yukon Territory." Items include correspondence, a photograph, lecture notes, an enduring power of attorney, a preliminary exam for land surveyors, certifications and membership cards, maps, a resume, promotion and reassignment notifications, and other business documents, booklets, articles, and technical information relating to the field of legal surveying.

A set of four holiday greeting cards and an included envelope. Each card has a different B&W photograph of a location in Edmonton, Alberta on the front. The photographs depict a dog train, the Grand Trunk Railway Hotel, and two shots of Jasper Avenue. Each card also has a small gold embossed circular design on the front with a holiday message. Inside each card is the same holiday greeting message. None of the cards have been signed.

Additional correspondence is included providing corrections and updates, presumably submitted by family members. A brochure for the dedication ceremony of the Northlands R.C.M.P. Commemorative Theatre, dated Wednesday, July 18, 1979. Includes information on the theater, a brief history of the 'A' Troop march from Roche Percee to Fort Edmonton in 1874, details of the preview of the proposed film "The Force" that was shown at the ceremony, photographs of Supt. W.D. Jarvis, Sgt. Major S. Steele, Inspector J. D. Moodie, and Sgt. Maj. A.H. Griesbach, a map of Western Canada, and a list of thanks to movie personnel, RCMP officers, the Edmonton NWMP Historical Attraction Advisory Board, and Northlands executives. Laid-in is another brochure announcing plans for the Northlands' Theme Village, scheduled to be completed in 1985. The front shows an illustration of a statue of Sgt. Maj. A.J. Griesbach and the back is a map of the location of the Theme Village within the Northlands' grounds.

Correspondence from the secretary of John George Diefenbaker, dated July 17, 1969. It is a response to a request from Mr. R. Lynn Ogden for a portrait of the former Prime Minister of Canada and explains the delay. The photograph is autographed, dedicated "with best wishes" to Mr. Ogden, and dated July 15, 1969. The envelope also bears the politician's signature in stamp form, as well as a 1st class mail label, a note that reads "Photograph - Do Not Bend," and Mr. Ogden's Edmonton, Alberta address.

PE002323 - Photographs and newspaper clipping from Mrs. Sarah Webb’s 100th and 105th birthdays

A small series of photographs of Mrs Sarah Webb’s 100th and 105th birthday celebrations. The newspaper clipping, which includes a B&W group photograph of friends and family surrounding Mrs Webb, is from 1967 and recounts Mrs Webb’s 100th birthday celebration. Her birthday is listed as July 30th, 1867. The clipping states that Mrs. Webb was born in England, and moved to Saskatchewan in 1908. At the time of her 100th birthday, she was residing in Kaslo, BC. The newspaper clipping indicates that Percy Orrell took the photo. The loose B&W photos show Mrs Webb’s 100th birthday celebration where she was presented with roses and a certificate signed by the late Governor-General Vanier and Miss Judy Lamarsh. The colour photos show Mrs. Webb seated in front of a large white sheet cake and the writing on the cake indicates it is her 105th birthday. Included in the collection is a yellow envelope addressed to Mr. Percy Orrell in Mirror Lake, B.C. from the photo department at the Nelson Daily News in Nelson, B.C.

Laid-in is a newspaper article on the event from the "Saskatoon Star-Pheonix" dated Tuesday, May 9, 1961, that includes two photographs of attendees, a description of the centerpieces, and a summary of the speech delivered by Mayor S. L. Buckwold. On the verso is an article citing recommendations from the Dominion Experimental Farm at Indian Head on which fruits will be best to grow that year.

A collection of small headshots compiled into a large image of members of the Lethbridge Sub-Division of the R. C. M. P. posing in uniform, dated May 1, 1961. The central image is of Inspector P. J. Vaucher. The second and third rows from the bottom also include six men and seven women not in uniform, and addressed as Mr., Mrs., Miss, or "C/M."

A travel guide to western North America by the Standard Oil Company of California. It covers the western states from the Pacific coast and goes as far east as Nebraska and Texas, and also includes British Columbia. The first page has been removed, but it would have read: "Welcome to the West. Joaquin Miller, famous Western poet, once wrote that eyes were made for this land. Wherever you drive across its length and breadth you find endless scenery that lives in the memory...sweeping plains, silvery deserts, majestic forests and mountains, haunting lakes and streams. And, at its farthest Western reaches, the moving beauty of the Pacific Ocean and its matchless shoreline. A reprinting, with pictures, of a journal kept by a member of a group of six "city folk" who took a canoe trip in Northern Saskatchewan from July 23 to August 13 [1955]. Author Denis Coolican was the President of the Canadian Bank Note Company. Their route is marked out on a large map that is attached to and unfolds from inside of the back cover.

An advertisement book and program for the Optimists Club's Boys' Town annual meeting at Western Canada High School in Calgary, Alberta, dated May 26-27, 1954. It consists primarily of advertisements for local businesses, with the event program on a single-sided orange page in the center. Also includes a foreword, "The Optimist Creed," a photograph of the Royal Family, messages from Mayor D. H. Mackay and Chief Constable L. S. Partridge, a list the board of governors of the Calgary Optimist Club, captioned photographs of school sports teams, and information on some of the scheduled performers.

"Rancho Don Carlos" depicts a well-dressed young couple embracing and kissing on the dance floor. The woman is wearing a backless dress, white high-heeled shoes, and a cuff bracelet and jeweled earrings. The man is wearing a light-coloured suit and glasses with thick frames. Other dancing couples can be seen in the background.

"The New Highwaymen" depicts 4 well-dressed adults, 2 men and 2 women, smiling while seated around a table with plates of food, drinks, and packages of cigarettes on the table in front of them. The men are wearing suits. The women are wearing dresses or blouses with jeweled necklaces, earrings, rings, and brooches.

A manuscript of a report for the Game and Fisheries Branch of the Department of Mines and Natural Resources, dated August, 1948 and compiled of data gathered in May, July, and August of 1947. The report examines the potential effects of the Manitoba Central Basin Project on the birds, fish, and "fur animals" along the Saskatchewan River, and includes information on topography, geology, soils, climate, hydrology, and vegetation, as well as a description of the project, and conclusions and recommendations. 48 b&w numbered and captioned photographs, primarily of terrain and river-related facilities and activities, have been mounted onto various pages, and a large fold out map of the Manitoba central basin is laid-in after the last page.

WWII-era photograph of Private Doris L. Colwell of Calgary (Alta.) working at the Canadian Army Base Post Office in Ottawa (Ont.), for use with the article titled "C.W.A.C. Christmas Mail" published in Canadian Press on Tuesday October 31, 1944. Attached caption reads "Pte. Colwell has been in the Canadian Women's Army Corps for almost a year and has been sorting letters for about six months - a job that requires nimble fingers and a good memory, because every pigeon hole in front of her represents a different unit of the Canadian Army overseas, and she is sorting letters by Military Units."

A yearbook for the Alberta Normal School in Edmonton for 1941-1942. Contents include a history of normal schools in Alberta, a dedication (opposite a colourized mounted photograph of a mountain scene with a bridge over a river), a message from the principal, poems and writing samples from students, photographs of students, staff, and scenes from campus, inspirational messages, and write-ups on sports teams and other activities and clubs. The last 25 pages are advertisements for local businesses, complete with its own directory. "Berthold Figur" written on the front loose endpaper.

Tourist information for travelers to the Rocky Mountains, covering locations in Alberta and B.C., by the Lands, Parks and Forests Branch of the National Parks Bureau of the Department of Mines and Resources. Includes information on accommodation, points of interest, wildlife, captioned photographs, and opportunities for recreation in the National Parks of Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lakes, Yoho, Kootenay, Glacier, and Mount Revelstoke. One map is titled "Main Routes to the National Parks in Alberta and British Columbia" and the other shows National Parks across Canada.

B&W photographs of the Royal visit of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and George V1 to Calgary, Alberta in May 1939. The photographs were taken by W. J. Oliver. One photograph documents the Royal couple riding in the back of a car, and another shows them meeting a group of Indigenous peoples. There is also a photograph of the Royal couple exiting Calgary City Hall on a red carpet that was borrowed from St. Augustine’s Church. The photographs come with a brown envelope addressed to Mrs. E. B. Mckay in Calgary, Alberta from W.J. Oliver. The envelope advertises that Oliver takes commercial, press, and portrait photographs.

PE002605 - "From Dog Sleds to Air-Conditioned Trains: A Pictorial History of the Canadian Pacific Railway;" 1939

A children's illustrated rhyming book about the evolution of transportation in Canada, provided by the Canadian Pacific Railway to young passengers. There is a blue card attached to the last page that reads "A Secret - This little book has been printed especially for the many Children who travel on the Canadian Pacific. It is all for them except the next two pages which are for Mother, Father or Grown-ups only - Tear off at perforation and the secret is out." The perforation has not been opened, but is known to contain information on dining accommodations available to passengers travelling with children. The inside of the back cover contains photographs of Canadian Pacific Hotels and a list of hostelries.

It includes b&w photographs, coloured art prints, and information on activities, sights, and other offerings available at various locations along the Canadian Pacific route.

PE002631 - Hydroelectric dams and power grid developments in the Canadian Rockies, 1927-1949, and other personal photographs from travels in Western Canada and the United States

The album largely consists of B&W photographs of hydroelectric dams and power plants in the Canadian Rockies, particularly Banff, Kananaskis Country, Seebe, Ghost River, and the Horseshoe Dam. Of particular note are approximately 24 photographs showing the aftermath of the fire that destroyed the Horseshoe plant in 1940 and approximately 20 photographs showing the construction of the Ghost Hydroelectric Dam.

The album also contains some personal photographs, including landscapes, wildlife, Boy Scout and Cub Scout events, houses, family portraits, children, Indigenous people in Banff, and photographs commemorating trips taken in Western Canada and the United States.

A loose collection of photographs and photographic postcards. Predominant subjects include horses, farming equipment and activities, children, and vehicles. One photograph shows some sort of canoeing event, and another is stamped "Genuine Sparkleton Prints, Regina Photo Supply Ltd" and dated September 28, 1926. Several photographs have been mounted onto black card album pages and then cut-out, retaining pieces of other photographs on the verso. Legible captions include "myself harvesting, not very clear," "Bill at Brighton," and "Herbert + the mare + colt. This is Kate the mare and colt 12 days old and roses, mother as well was taken at bounty fair fancy this mare having one colt."

PE002811 - "The Light" yearbooks from the Provincial Normal School; Saskatoon (Sask.), 1926-1947

Two year books from "S.N.S." (Saskatoon Normal School) for the school years of 1925-1926 and 1946-1947. They both include composite photographs of graduating students, writing samples and poetry, yearbook staff lists, athletics reports, editorials, and messages from the principal. The 1925-1926 copy has the inscription "Margaret M. Rennie, Room A. S.N.S." on the first page, many handwritten signitures under "Autographs" on pages 56-57, and the signature of orchestra conductor Mrs. Helen Davies Sherry on page 115. The 1946-1947 copy has two newspaper clippings attached to the inside of the front cover reporting on the death of Dr. Frederick James Gathercole, one being from the Leader-Post of Regina, Saskatchewan and dated Tuesday, December 28, 1993. Another clipping on the funeral service for Mrs. E. J. Ouellette is taped to page 34, and an obituary for Michael Joseph Schafer is taped to page 65 underneath his portrait, dated 1947. A retirement notice for Roy Lockert, also clipped from the Leader-Post and dated Friday, July 4, 1980, is attached to page 101. Pages 102-104 contain various other materials taped in including graduation programs, a red heart-shaped autograph book with signatures, and a typed memo on the decision of the Saskatoon Normal School Student's Assembly during their executive meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 1947 to "allot a sum of $50 to the next assembly for the buying of a radio." It also includes advertisements for local businesses.
