A handwritten letter addressed to "My dear Tiffany" [probably Edward H. Tiffany, barrister], from North West Mounted Police sergeant C. H. Connon, written after the 1885 North-West Resistance. The letter makes clear Connon's displeasure with public and media perception of the N.W.M.P. and its role in the Resistance, especially in comparison to General [Frederick Dobson] Middleton and his volunteers, of whom he writes that "the sickening drivel and slobbery mass of fulsome adulation bestowed on the volunteers coupled with the utterly unjust criticism of the Police and studied and insulting silence as to what they really did during the late troubles make one much in love with one's grateful country and impartial public press".

The letter also makes the claim that Connon and Commander A. G. [Acheson Gosford] Irvine's unit, stationed at Prince Albert and Fort Carlton, "were out for a month in search of Big Bear and we [underlined for emphasis] got him", refuting what he called General Middleton's "calm assurance to claim credit for his capture". Connon further explains that "we travelled three or four hundreds of miles after him over country which Gen Middleton pronounced to be impassable and an outpost of our own men at last grabbed the redoubtable Big Bear when Middleton and his "heroic" volunteers were over a hundred miles away".

Also of note, the letter dates the fire that destroyed Fort Carlton as having happened on 28 March 1885, stating that they evacuated the post at that time.

Photographs showing the Doukhobors in Saskatchewan in 1902. 8 photographs, on mounts with black intersecting pointers at the corners, are distinctly captioned and numbered as belonging to a series of 10 images called "Photographic Description of the Doukhobor Invasion of Yorkton". 3 additional photographs on matching mounts are likely part of or related to this series, but are not captioned or numbered as so.

Captioned photographs include:

  1. "Last night's camp before arriving at Yorkton"
  2. "1600 Doukhobors marching into Yorkton, a modern exodus"
  3. "Procession passing down 4th Avenue showing sick on stretchers of poles and the blind being led"
  4. "Doukhobor men in the attitude of prayer on the outskirts of Yorkton after being separated from the women and children the night before"
  5. "Doukhobors refusing to return to their villages, showing Government officers trying to urge them on"
  6. "Leaving Yorkton on their way to Winnipeg to evangelize the world, being escorted out of town by the N.W.M.P. and officers"
  7. "Pilgrims kissing each other before parting at Yorkton"
  8. "Men and boys hitched to a wagon loaded with a ton of flour, leaving Yorkton."

The remaining 3 uncaptioned photographs on matching mounts show groups of Doukhobors on pilgrimage walking along roads. They appear to be taken at the same time as the captioned ones, and may include the missing photographs numbered 2 and 9, but this is unclear.

An additional series of 7 similar photographs on mounts with gilt borders is present. 6 images show Doukhobors on pilgrimage, 2 of which are captioned "Line of Pilgrims (Fort Pelly)" and "Returning from the Pilgrimage (Fort Pelly)"; remaining 1 image shows two Doukhobor women in traditional clothing, captioned "In Holiday Attire".

Western adventure and romance stories are also well-represented in Beadle's Frontier Series. Despite the age and acidic paper of the dime novels, their condition ranges from Fair to Very Good, with the covers of only a few copies ripped, torn, or missing altogether. Novels are stored individually in 9 x 12 inch envelopes.

PS 8237 M6 D38 · Fonds · [197-]-2012

Fonds consist of David McKnight’s Canadian Little Magazine and Small Press archive, reflecting his interest in documenting the history of this genre of Canadian publishing, and include the pioneering work in the field done by Wynne Francis whose research files form part of the fonds. Through both of their collecting, the David McKnight fonds consists of materials which cover the history of Canadian small press publishing from 1923-2010.

The designation of the series was arrived at after considering the ordering of the material as it was received at Bruce Peel Special Collections. It was clear that there was an original ordering of the files, often according to an alphabetical or chronological scheme, and the files had titles. David McKnight separated his files broadly into those associated with his mentor and advisor, Wynne Francis, and his own research/collection files, and as much as possible, this structure is maintained. Series titles were arrived at after considering the collection in its entirety, and the apparent order implied by McKnight’s file listings and comments. The material was received in two shipments, but was intended as one donation, so some assignment of series and file titles, combining the material in the two shipments, was necessary. The records are almost all textual, although there are three microfilm reels, two cassette tapes, and two photographs.

Taking into consideration both the information provided by David McKnight in a letter to the Head of Bruce Peel Special Collections, and the contents of the records received, six series and several sub-series were established to better facilitate access to the collection.

This collection offers an expansive view of the experiences of Chinese immigrants to Canada, particularly in the Prairie Provinces. While many narratives of Chinese immigration to Canada focus on the construction of the CPR, the emphasis here is on the numerous and diverse roles that Chinese immigrants played in Canada's history. This collection explores the Chinese experience through immigration, entrepreneurship, schooling, and other elements of daily life. Among other things, it is made up of photographs, scrapbooks, business documents, personal correspondence, immigration records, magazines, books, phonograph records, and event programs. A great deal of credit is due to Helen Kwan Yee Cheung, who encouraged donations from the local Chinese community thus helping to build a uniquely community-based collection.
