The glass plate slides, also known as lantern slides, were used by the Faculty of Extension, the Department of Entomology, and E.H Strickland for lecture purposes. The 121 slides feature photographs and illustrations of beetles, ants, flies, and many other insect specimens, as well as charts, graphs, and material from textbooks, research, and field work.

Soper spent five months in the Nettilling Lake area, surveying its topography, mapping the lake and surrounding terrain, and collecting animal and plant specimens for the Victoria Memorial (later National) Museum of Ottawa.

Photograph depicts the first land office in Winnipeg. Opened in 1873 it was known as the "best house" in Winnipeg. Constructed of squared logs with clap board covering. The men in the photo were Land Department employees. The Land Department was located on the first story and the surveyor's offices were on the second story. The stack of bricks in the foreground served as a vault.

Photograph depicts Main Street, Winnipeg. H.D. Lumsden describes the photo as follows: " at the angle where Brown's Coulee was. The building at the left with the porch is the City Hall of Winnipeg. The view is looking North. This building had to be torn down owing to weakening of its foundations. The City decided it could fill in the coulee where the bridge stood, but unfortunately did not leave an aperture of sufficient size to allow the necessary discharge of water during the very wet season of June 1877."

Geological Survey photo. This mine opened just south of Stair Station on the CPR line near the south bank of the Saskatchewan River. The mine began shipping coal in 1883 to Winnipeg. This venture proved a loss due to poor quality. Pearce acquired this photograph to illustrate his "Historical Narrative" of development of the Canadian West. He collected photos as he wrote his narrative between 1917 and 1928.

The series consists of six leatherbound books. Each letterbook numbers over 600 pages of handwritten correspondence. Correspondence represents copies of incoming and outgoing commmunication relating predomiantly to Pearce's professional work as a surveyor for the Department of the Interior. The hand copied letters are in chronological order and each letterbook has a subject index.

The series title is based on the contents of records.

Headquarters of the free whisky traders erected in 1868. Practically an outpost of the I. G. Baker Co. since this firm furnished supplies from Fort Benton to establish post along the Old Forts Trail; later occupied by the Royal Northwest Mounted Police.

It is probably the largest collection of buffalo bones ever accumulated. Native groups had been gathering them for two seasons since it was known the Canadian Pacific Railway would be constructed at this point.
