The William Pearce Fonds consists of records documenting the three phases of his professional life: federal surveyor and administrator (1874-1884); federal advisor for western development policy (1884-1904); and western consultant for the Canadian Pacific Railway (post-1904). Most of the records in the Pearce fonds were created in the region that was the focus of his career: the territory fomerly known as Rupert's Land and the North-West Territory, later to become the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The fonds consists of two leather bound photo albums. The photos were taken during Cameron's research field trips into northern Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Cameron usually performed the trips for the Department of Mining Engineering with senior students. The first album, titled University of Alberta, 1915 -1938, was created for the Department of Mining Engineering. The second album, Field Trips, for Research Council of Alberta, were taken in 1921 and 1930. The photos remain in the arrangement Cameron created and the captions inform the descriptions for each photo.

The Romanet papers consist of correspondence, notebooks and reports on the fur trade, and the manuscripts of Kabluk of the Eskimo including several revisions. When the collection was received by the Archives in 1972, only a small part was preserved in Louis Romanets own meticulous arrangement. Care has been taken to maintain these files in their original order; but it was necessary to sort and arrange the bulk of the collection to define Romanet's career. One of the journals he composed during his first winter in Canada exists only as a carbon copy on tissue sheets. It is so fragile that a transcription has been made for the use of researchers. The 860 photographs in the collection depict the Hudson's Bay Company's employees, trading posts, and stern-wheel steamships; the native population of Northern Canada including the Arctic Islands; and the Romanet family. Almost 100 of the photographs were collected from Government and Hudsons Bay Company sources to illustrate Kabluk of the Eskimo, although only sixteen were used in the published version. A descriptive inventory was prepared in 1975. This inventory was revised and reprinted in 1997, however, the physical arrangement of the fonds was not altered.

William Rowan's papers consist of correspondence, field diaries, sketches, research notes, teaching materials and observations in Zoology (especially in ornithology) from 1908 to 1957. The manuscripts of his published and unpublished books, and of his speeches and writings on scientific and social matters, are an important part of the papers. Professor Rowan pioneered research in migration patterns and corresponded with major scientific figures across North America, Great Britain, and the European Continent. Recognized as a talented scientific artist he designed the whooping crane stamp for the Canada Post Office in 1954. His zoological designs also originated from his work in the Canadian and international conservation movement. His speeches, radio talks and writing reflect his interest in world political matters and the nuclear age. The Rowan family members wrote often and at length to each other. Their letters include their observation of local, national and international affairs from 1908 to 1957.

The textual and photographic records in the Heber C. Jamieson fonds represent the research material gathered by Dr. Jamieson for use in speeches, teaching, or in his published works on the history of medicine in Alberta. They consist of correspondence, articles in typed or published form, bound volumes of the history and minutes of University medical clubs, news clippings, publications and photographs, which cover the period 1861 to 1961. Except for nine alphabetically arranged files of biographical information on pioneer doctors and nurses, the greater part of the collection, although in labelled folders, was in no apparent order. In many cases the relationship between doctor or nurse and hospital, or doctor or nurse and association or organization was so closely intermingled that separation into distinct groups would be impossible. To accomodate this situation, the records are divided into textual records and photographic records. Where possible similar subjects were consolidated and an index was created for information on people, institutions, and organizations.

The photographs document his Arctic expeditions for the Canadian government and his work as an officer of the Federal Wildlife Services Department and comprise predominantly the years 1920 to the early 1950s. The textual material more completely documents the span of his lifetime with diaries and field notes from the 1910s to his post 1960s research for the University of Alberta's Department of Zoology. Title is based on the content of the fonds. No further accruals are expected.

The Lewis H. Thomas fonds span a period of over forty years, and provide a valuable record of the research, teaching, and life experiences of a significant scholar and long-serving member of the University of Alberta's faculty. In his career as an archivist; professor; and researcher and writer of scholarly history, Dr. Thomas' papers encompass a wide range of topics related to the historical development of Western Canada. The source material and research files in this fonds include a wealth of archival documents, bibliographies, imprint items, and research notes on subjects related to the exploration, settlement, and growth of Western Canada, particularly the Prairie region. Dr. Thomas published extensively in this area, and his research files and lecture note material provide insight into the many subjects he lectured and wrote about. They provide insight also into the research methodologies and strategies that he applied in his own work. There is information related to his teaching career at both the Universities of Saskatchewan (Regina) and Alberta, and documents related to the Department of History at the University of Alberta, and Professor Thomas' position as chairman of this department. Among his papers are files of professional correspondence that contain letters written to colleagues, including many well-known Canadian historians, across the country. There is correspondence with graduate students whose work Dr. Thomas supervised, and letters of recommendation prepared by Thomas for these same students as they applied for grants or employment opportunities. Shortly before he died, L.H. Thomas wrote to a young writer that "the aspect of my work which has given me the greatest satisfaction is teaching, and associations with students." (See Accession #87-130-4) He supervised the work of six doctoral students, several masters' students, and sat as a member of many thesis supervising committees. As the long-serving Alberta representative on the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board, L.H. Thomas' papers contain a great deal of information about the workings of the board with particular reference to the naming of historic sites in Alberta and Northern Canada. L.H. Thomas' varied committee experience and affiliation with other national organizations and associations is well documented in the papers. As well, L.H. Thomas' experience as an archivist, and his life-long interest in promoting and encouraging the use of archival documents in historical research, is a subject touched upon frequently in his papers. He corresponds with archivists, writes about archival practice, and fills his source material files with items gleaned from archival holdings. Finally, researchers interested in the topic of Canadian socialism may find these records relevant. L.H. Thomas was himself a life-long supporter of socialist doctrine, and published articles on the CCF and Socialist movements. His last major work before his death was a transcription of a series of taped interviews with Tommy Douglas, and records related to this subject are included in the papers. The records are in excellent physical condition and have been arranged into four series: Early Records; University of Alberta Records; Research and Publication Records; and Associations, Committees and Boards Records. Within these broad series designations are sub-series that further organize the records. Where possible, the file titles provided by L.H. Thomas are retained. A brief description of each series is provided, followed by a detailed file listing. A subject and name index is found at the end of the inventory to assist in locating specific files.

The fonds consists of material collected and created by Bill Tuomi during his career as a social activist and member of the Canadian Communist Party. Materials include news clippings, correspondence, Communist party publications, arrest and detention documents, and other materials.

The papers, covering the period 1895 to 1983, consist chiefly of biographical data, correspondence, diplomas and certificates, texts of speeches, reports, accounts, property and estate business, maps, sketch plans, blueprints, publications, and reference material. Dr. Blair had made notes about the contents of some folders and envelopes, but most of the labelling of files had been done either by one of his secretaries or by Mrs. Roughley as she was preparing to work on the project. While the file headings correctly identified the contents, there was very little order apparent in the arrangement of the files except in the case of the reports of Trinidad Leaseholds Limited, his speeches, and those files relating to Dr. Blair's memberships and directorships in various organizations, clubs and corporations. Photographs, both personal and business, constitute the fifth series and include photos of Dr. Blair, his family and friends, and projects and activities with which he was associated in his professional life.
