The album documents the experiences of an Alberta soldier during World War I from recruitment to his return from Europe. The captions of several photographs suggest that he served with Alberta's 3rd Regiment of the Canadian Mounted Rifles. Organized in December 1914, the 3rd Regiment mobilized recruits in Edmonton and Medicine Hat. These soldiers arrived in England in June 1915 and were transferred to France in September of that year.

The album's first image is a postcard of the Grandin Street School, Strathcona [Edmonton], Alberta, accompanied by the annotation "Old King Edward School, Strathcona Barracks, C Sqdn, 3rd C.M.R., Dec. 29, 1914 - June 1, 1915." Subsequent photographs, dated from March to May 1915, depict soldiers in uniform - both at leisure and in training - and the presentation of the Regimental Colours. Photographs of the train journey from Edmonton to Montreal, including images of Camp Sewell, Manitoba, and the trans-Atlantic crossing to England are present.

The shipboard experiences of the soldier are among the most extensively documented. The album contains not only images of the transport ship (S.S. Megantic) and the naval vessels escorting it, but also several pieces of printed ephemera related to the trip. These include a card indicating the room and berth occupied, a list of officers transported, and a summary of weather conditions during the voyage. The berth card provides the only clear textual evidence of the identity of the soldier as it contains the signature of a Philip Dennison. The nominal roll of the Regiment (available online through the Internet Archive at https://archive.org/details/CEF_3CMR_1915/page/n3 [accessed 10 December 2018]) includes a Philip Emile Dennison who enlisted in Edmonton on 30 December 1914.

The album also contains images of the soldier's active service and discharge. These include photographs of troops and equipment at Shorncliffe, a camp in England. Three of the photographs taken at Shorncliffe capture dirigibles in flight. The album also contains commercial postcards of battle sites in France. The album also includes three pieces of printed ephemera from his active service. Two of these are stationery approved for use by military personnel to prevent the communication of classified information. The third is a card providing instructions on the use and care of tube helmets, devices to be deployed in case of gas attack. The album also contains four portraits of nurses and military personnel at the Dane John and Freefolk hospitals in England. There are also documents that accompanied the presentation of a medal as well as cards of appreciation to returning servicemen from King George V and the citizens of Halifax.

The image loose in the album is a photograph of a man in uniform identified in manuscript annotation as Lieutenant-Colonel P. Anderson. This seems likely to be a portrait of Peter Anderson, an Edmonton businessman who was among the first contingent of Canadian soldiers to go overseas during the conflict. Lt.-Col. Anderson, who spent time as a German prisoner of war, was highly decorated for his service. After the war, he wrote a memoir of his experiences, I that's me: Escape from German prison camp and other adventures. For more information, please see the biographical entry in the Provincial Archive of Alberta's Peter Anderson fonds (available online at https://hermis.alberta.ca/paa/Details.aspx?st=edmonton&cp=1828&ReturnUrl=%2Fpaa%2FSearch.aspx%3Fst%3Dedmonton%26cp%3D1828&dv=True&DeptID=1&ObjectID=PR0421 [accessed 10 December 2018]).

The album's final photograph is accompanied by the manuscript annotation "Major Fane's funeral, Beaver Lake, Vegreville, June 6th, 1922." The nominal roll of the 3rd Regiment includes a Major Frank William Fane, a former Royal Northwest Mounted Police officer who enlisted on 29 December 1914. The album contains a second photograph of Major Fane sitting in wheelchair in what may be the grounds of a hospital. The caption reads "Major Fane, Le Touquet, Feby 2, 1916."

A letter that was issued to [Charles] Hay in Claresholm, Alberta from James Wilson at the Office of the Recorder of Brands for the Province of Alberta. The letter was sent in January 1915. The letter explains that by the new Brand Act for the Province, the recipient’s brand will be cancelled on December 31, 1915. The recipient can secure the brand again for a period of four years following an application process and a fee of $2.00. In the letter, the brand of [Charles] Hay is listed as "IC," was used on horses, and was allotted May 23, 1905.
The Brand Act dictates that due to a large number of brands being issued since 1907, instead of purchasing new brands, all old brands would be cancelled so that ones no longer being used can be repurchased for use, and all brands still in use must apply to continue their usage.

Although several captions list the individual pictured as "self" or "myself," the creator of the album does not appear to be explicitly identified. Nonetheless, several pieces of ephemera in the album - including passes and a voucher for a railway ticket - refer to a S.W. Kerley. One item carrying Mr. Kerley's name is accompanied by the caption "My last ration book in Blighty." Internal references suggest that the soldier served with the 31st Battalion, Alberta Regiment, and a S.W. Kerley is included in the nominal roll. For more information on the Regiment, please see its entry in the Canadian Great War Project Web site (available online at http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/Regimental/31stBattalion.asp [accessed on 10 December 2018]).

The album documents the experiences of an Alberta soldier during World War I from recruitment to his return from Europe. The majority of photographs capture Mr. Kerley and his fellow soldiers in a variety of settings from training in Alberta to the battlefields of Europe. The album contains portraits of soldiers taken in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Edmonton, Bramshott, England, as well as in Germany and Belgium. Many of the soldiers are identified at least by surname and, in some cases, more fully. There are also images of major Canadian battlefields such as Arras-Cambrai Road, Ypres, Passchendaele, and Vimy Ridge.

The 31st Battalion did not return to Canada until May of 1919, remaining in Germany to serve as part of the occupying forces. The album also documents this phase of the war, containing four photographs dated January 1919 with the accompanying captions "Outpost duty in Germany." Several pieces of ephemera also appear to be from Mr. Kerley's service during the occupation. These include the address of a German family, laundry lists, and a theatre programme from Namur, Belgium, dated 4 March 1919.

As with the photographs and postcards, the printed ephemera document many aspects of Mr. Kerley's military service. The album contains materials from the ship voyages to and from Europe, including menus, a concert programme, and a card listing berth and mess information. There is also a card from the Canadian Pacific Railway for soldiers travelling in Canada following repatriation.

Mr. Kerley also collected a number of miscellaneous souvenirs from his time in Europe, including currency and an identity card used by French and Belgian workers during the German occupation. Documents specifically related to his military service - such as a menu from a 1917 Christmas dinner, a programme from the Canadian Corps Championship (a multi-sport athletic competition held on 1 July 1918), and German and Canadian field-letter cards - are also present.

In a few cases, captions indicate the provenance of individual items, some of which appear to have been taken as souvenirs of combat. Several photographs are listed as having been found on battlefields. For example, three photographs are accompanied by these captions:
• “German N.C.O.’s found on an N.C.O. during the Amiens Drive, Aug.-1918”
• “’A German Fraulein’ found on a Hun soldier found at Neuville Vitasse”
• “Found this photo laying beside this soldier’s body after our capture of Rosiers on the Somme – 1918 Aug.”

Three letters relating to the taxes owed on a property owned by Private Charles C. Slatford, 37th Batallion, of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The first letter, dated July 10, 1916, is addressed to Mr Stephenson in the office of the Secretary-Treasurer in Red Deer, Alberta. Private Slatford inquires as to why the Red Deer Civic authorities are attempting to dispose of his property due to unpaid taxes while he is on active duty. The second letter, dated July 12, 1916, is addressed to Private Stalford’s father to inform him that the Red Deer civic authorities have been instructed to direct their reply to him as Private Stalford will likely be away before a reply reaches him. The third letter, dated July 26, 1916, is addressed to E.H. Slatford Esq. (Private Slatford’s father) in London, England, from A.J. Stephenson of the office of the Secretary-Treasurer in Red Deer, Alberta. This letter states that the office was not aware Private Slatford had enlisted in the army as they had no notice, but his father can rest assured they will protect the property until after the end of the war. Also included in this small collection is a souvenir menu from the Empress of Britain steamship with Private Slatford’s name written on the back, an Empress of Britain sailing log, and an envelope addressed to C.C.
