Blackberg familyThe papers, covering the period 1895 to 1983, consist chiefly of biographical data, correspondence, diplomas and certificates, texts of speeches, reports, accounts, property and estate business, maps, sketch plans, blueprints, publications, and reference material. Dr. Blair had made notes about the contents of some folders and envelopes, but most of the labelling of files had been done either by one of his secretaries or by Mrs. Roughley as she was preparing to work on the project. While the file headings correctly identified the contents, there was very little order apparent in the arrangement of the files except in the case of the reports of Trinidad Leaseholds Limited, his speeches, and those files relating to Dr. Blair's memberships and directorships in various organizations, clubs and corporations. Photographs, both personal and business, constitute the fifth series and include photos of Dr. Blair, his family and friends, and projects and activities with which he was associated in his professional life.

He was instrumental in the modernization of the University’s successful Analytical Chemistry program. Dr Harris was acclaimed for his work in chemistry education, scientific research, and committee service.
The materials date from 1915 to 2011. The records predominately date after Harris began his career at the University of Alberta in 1946. The collection is rich in teaching materials, including a number of lectures written verbatim, an abundance of lecture slides and audio visual recordings of Walter Harris lecturing, as well as a significant amount of Dr. Harris’ research papers and supporting information. The fonds also incorporates materials related to the history of the Chemistry Department at the University of Alberta. In addition, it provides insight into Harris’ book publications with related correspondence, revisions and notes. The fonds is abundant in records relating to Harris’ work as a committee member including meeting minutes, agendas, committee reports, and correspondence.

Hynam, Charles A.S.The textual and photographic records in the Heber C. Jamieson fonds represent the research material gathered by Dr. Jamieson for use in speeches, teaching, or in his published works on the history of medicine in Alberta. They consist of correspondence, articles in typed or published form, bound volumes of the history and minutes of University medical clubs, news clippings, publications and photographs, which cover the period 1861 to 1961. Except for nine alphabetically arranged files of biographical information on pioneer doctors and nurses, the greater part of the collection, although in labelled folders, was in no apparent order. In many cases the relationship between doctor or nurse and hospital, or doctor or nurse and association or organization was so closely intermingled that separation into distinct groups would be impossible. To accomodate this situation, the records are divided into textual records and photographic records. Where possible similar subjects were consolidated and an index was created for information on people, institutions, and organizations.

Keeping, Ernest SydneyThe Byron Kratochvil fonds documents the professional career of an important teacher, researcher, writer and administrator who was associated with the University of Alberta for over thirty years. Dr. Kratochvil attained recognition as a respected analytical chemist, and served the University of Alberta as a professor of Chemistry, chairman of the Department of Chemistry, and as an administrator in his role as Associate Vice-President (Research). The records, largely textual, document Byron Kratochvil’s career at the University of Alberta, but also touch upon his earlier teaching experiences and research interests. The records provide a significant documentation of Kratochvil’s teaching career, with several files of lecture notes, student examinations and projects, and class records. Also strongly represented in the fonds, are the records generated from the textbooks written by Kratochvil and W.E. Harris and originally computer-published by the University of Alberta. Various drafts of the textbooks are retained in the records, complete with numerous annotations, inserts, corrections and research notes. There are fairly complete files of Chemistry Department-related records in the Kratochvil fonds, which include meeting minutes, internal memorandum, and committee reports retained on an annual basis. Byron Kratochvil was chair of the Department of Chemistry from 1989-1995, so the Department material for these years provides insight into the role of the Chairman, and the relationship the Department had with the larger Faculty of Science it reported to. Included also are the documents generated by the various University committees and research groups Professor Kratochvil sat on; of particular note are detailed files related to the Environmental Research and Studies Centre. A smaller series contains records generated during Byron Kratochvil’s time as Associate Vice-President (Research). A comprehensive set of Byron Kratochvil’s professional correspondence forms one series, and provides a record of his written communication with colleagues, graduate students, and scientific associations, relating to his research and various other issues. Among Kratochvil’s research interest topics are those in the area of the theory and application of sampling for chemical analysis; the measurement of free metal ion concentrations in solution; and the development of new analytical reagents and methods in nonacqueous solvents. Two smaller series contain documents linked to professional associations Professor Kratochvil supported, with textual and photographs items documenting scientific conferences and workshops he attended; as well as consulting work undertaken. The final series in this finding-aid consists of material designated as ‘personal’, although still very related to the series that precede it. Included here are copies of personnel documents related to salary and promotions, copies of CV’s and biographies as well as day planners and collected archives. The records are in excellent physical shape and because of their completeness and the broad span of years represented, provide valuable insight into one man’s career at the University of Alberta..
