PE004808 - Various scenes from the University of Alberta

Twelve (12) photograph cards depicting various scenes from the University of Alberta. Pictures are in colour, and show aerial views of the north campus, as well as the various buildings around campus. All are printed on white plain paper which has been folded in half. The interiors are blank, except for a small caption in the top left corner.

Four (4) B&W photographs depicting life in Doukhobor settlements in Canada:  

  • Five (5) youths walking in a settlement of wooden huts, with hills in the background. On the back there is a stamp proclaiming it to be a copyrighted photograph owned exclusively by STAR Newspaper Services of Toronto, ONT. There is also a hand-written note in the top corner noting it to be the Doukhobors (from Rapid Grip and Batten). The photograph has curled quite a bit, and there is some staining on the back. There is also a large scratch in the bottom right section of the photograph.,  
  • A camp of tents with stovepipe chimneys. There are women in the foreground performing domestic chores, and a group of men in the background. This photograph also has a stamp on the back proclaiming it to be a copyrighted photograph owned exclusively by STAR Newspaper Services of Toronto, ONT, and a hand-written note in the top corner noting it to be the Doukhobors (from Rapid Grip and Batten. Photograph is quite curled, and there is a small amount of staining on the back.,
  • A group of Doukhobors in a tented camp, with forested hills in the background. There is a group of naked youths sitting in the foreground, with various adults, clothed and unclothed, standing around in the background. Two of the women are wearing swim caps and bathing costumes. The background shows a cabin in a natural setting.

Sepia prints, mounted in album and captioned, by Charles P. Staubach of his family's 1917 Pacific Coast trip. Album is marked Binder No. 11. Typed title page has list of stops in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as the U.S. cities Minneapolis, Chicago, and Detroit. All photographs mounted on black cardboard pages and captioned. Title page is browned and has come loose from album; actual photographs are in good condition.

PE000797 - Entrance Examination Papers from the Manitoba Board of Examinations

A five (5) volume compilation of the entrance examination papers for admission to the Provincial Normal Schools and the University of Manitoba, conducted by the Manitoba Board of Examinations. Each volume is divided into several subjects for examination, including history, mathematical calculations, botany, French literature, German literature, composition, physics, geometry, latin, among others.

  • Volume 1: 1928.
  • Volume 2: 1929. The name J.W. Gordon is handwritten on the top left corner of the pastedown.
  • Volume 3: 1930.
  • Volume 4: 1931. The spine has begun to rip from the bottom. Pastedown has several stains and pencil scribbles, and the name M.M. S./ Feb. 1931 are written on the top left corner.
  • Volume 5. 1932. The spine is ripping and deteriorating.

Blue title: "Bible Readings for Schools." Above this is a crest for Education Alberta. Below the title, it indicates the booklet was approved by the Honourable Ivan Casey, Minister of Education. Below this it indicates the handbook sold for ten cents per copy. Finally, below this, it indicates the handbook was issued by the School-Book Branch Department of Education, Edmonton, Alberta. The interior lists bible readings recommended for each grade, including the bible verses and page numbers. 

PE000938 - Chemistry 30 Exam written by Don Williams

A Chemistry 30 exam written by Don Williams. Questions are hand-written in blue ink. Not all questions are answered; those that are were written in black ink. There is another question on the back of the exam written in darker ink, which looks like an addition after the copy was made.

Invitation, "The Chancellor of The University of Alberta has the honor to announce The Thirty-ninth Annual Convocation for the Awarding of Scholarships, Prizes and Medals and the Conferring of Degrees in McDougall Auditorium, at two-fifteen o’clock Wednesday Afternoon, May the eighteenth nineteen hundred and forty-nine." Invitation has the University of Alberta’s crest at the top.

PE004811 - Univ. of Alberta "The Frosh Handbook"

Booklet with the title "The Frosh Handbook." The front cover contains an ink drawing of a cartoon cowboy holding a handbook, standing next to a sign which says: UofA Dude Ranch. The interior title page states it’s The Frosh Handbook, which is followed by the University of Alberta’s crest. It’s edited by Margaret Weir, and the Director is Al Armstrong. Booklet contains 56 pages which contains information for new students at the university, including rules for fraternities, schedule of activities, the constitution, etc.

PE004901 - Program for Royal Alexandra Hospital Alumni Event

Program - R.A.H. Alumni Event (Royal Alexandra Hospital Alumnae Association). The cover contains an drawn black and white illustration of a nurse holding a parchment with the words “RAH Alumnae” written on it. The program is handwritten in black ink and has decorative purple and yellow strings tied along the spine.

PE000608 - Farm Account Book prepared by the Dept. of Farm Management, College of Agriculture, Univ. of Saskatchewan

Farm Account Book prepared by the Department of Farm Management, College of Agriculture, University of Saskatchewan. This account book was used by Roger Carlton of Benson, Saskatchewan for his Farm Management II class. It is partially filled in with information dated between 1940 and 1941, likely from examples used in class. The cover of the book says “revised November 1948.”

PE000931 - Sacred Heart Academy Graduation Ball program

Front cover contains a leaf motif on the left hand side, and states: Sacred Heart Academy Graduation Ball C.Y.C Hall, May 12th, 1950 9:00 to 12:00. Sponsored by Sacred Heart Academy & College Alumnae.  The interior is titled "Programme," and has 12 blank lines, under which are varying titles, (e.g. Freshman’s Fight, Scholars’ Scoot, Basketball Bounce, etc). Three of the blank lines above these titles have been filled in by hand with a pencil, and include the names of: Jack Hamilton, Emmett Reid, S. Gardner. The back of the programme is blank.

Notice from Beverages Ltd. to the Canadian Credit Men’s Trust Association Ltd., folded in thirds, with slight tearing on the edges and what appear to be thumbtack holes in the upper left-hand corner.  Notice discusses the account of a Mrs. Smith, and indicates a “statutory declaration” in connection with the account as being sent to the Canadian Credit Men’s Trust Association.

PE004906 - Calendar Compliments of F.G. Webber Hardware

Calendar- Compliments of F.G. Webber Hardware. Once flipped open it contains each day of the month and its corresponding weekday, as well as sunrise & sunset times and moon phases. Above the small calendar there is a 20 x 13.5 cm colour photograph of the Rocky Mountains. The calendar and photograph are pasted on a 31.5 x 25.5 cm brown cardboard mat, which has the company’s (F.G. Webber Hardware) contact information. The mat also has a brown string tied at its center top which serves to hang this piece.

The “Private and Confidential No. 1 Price List” for the Manitoba branch of the Massey-Harris Co., Limited for the year 1906.  Salesmanship suggestions printed on the inside covers.  Terms for sale are followed by prices for farm equipment: binders, mowers, rakes, manure spreaders, drills, cultivators, feed cutters, no.6 diamond harrow, no.11 clip harrow, no.8 lever harrow, disc harrows, cream separators, plows, scuffler, vehicle jack, rollers and packers, wheelbarrows, sleighs, wagons, spring lorries, wagon boxes, and wagon parts.

Documents pertaining to the acquisition and maintenance of a thresher’s license. Includes the following:

  • 16.7 x 25.4 cm bifold pamphlet titled: "1934 Chapter 28 An Act to amend and consolidate The Threshers’ Lien Act." Document contains the different aspects of the act, including registration of the threshing machine and threshers’ liens. Back page notes the pamphlet was printed in Edmonton by A. Shnitka, King’s Printer.;
  • 17.7 x 14 cm certificate printed on thick paper stock, titled: "Registration Certificate for Threshing Machine 1941 Registration No. 3416." The certificate is printed in green writing, and contains the emblem for the Department of Agriculture in Alberta, as well as the Deputy Minister of Agriculture’s signature.;
  • 14 x 8.6 cm Canada Post card printed on cream colored thick paper stock. One side contains the Department of Agriculture of Alberta’s emblem, and is a blank report card to be filled out by the thresher owner at the close of harvest season. It includes details such as the name and address of the thresher, and how many acres and bushels of various crops were collected at the end of the harvest season. The opposite side shows that the card has postage pre-paid by the Department of Agriculture of Edmonton, Alberta. The top notes: "Canada Post Card," and there is a 1 cent stamp printed on it.;
  • 27.8 x 17.5 cm notice printed on brown card stock. The top of the notice states: "This card must be attached to a prominent part of the threshing machine. The Noxious Weeds Act. Provisions Relating to Threshers." Below this are noted several sections pertaining to the cleaning of threshing machines and grain, as well as extracts from the Act Affecting Threshing Machine Operators.;
  • 24.2 x 16.5 cm brown envelope. The top of the envelope states: "Thresher’s License No. 3416." On the top left corner it states: "Department of Agriculture Government Buildings Edmonton Alberta." The envelope appears to be addressed to S. Bororoski, ? (there is a second name below this, but it is unclear what it says).

Head Office: Grain Exchange Winnipeg." Front cover is grey with blue writing, and contains a photograph of a Federal Grain Limited elevator. Back cover contains an advertisement for Federal Service Grain Ltd. Inside front cover contains an identification page. Back inside cover contains an arithmetical table and legal weights of farm crops. Interior pages contain several lined blank pages for personal notes, along with several specialty pages, including: blank storage ticket record pages, blank record of cash tickets and settlements pages, charts showing the average monthly price of wheat, table of freight rates, exports of Canadian wheat and flour, world shipments of wheat and flour, harvest times of the world, various charts to calculating measurements, and a 1944-1945 calendar. Notebook front cover reads: "Harold & Thompson Holland Binder Twine. Manufacture by United Ropeworks Rotterdam-Holland. Our Brands: Queen City-550 ft. Prairie Pride-600 ft. Harold & Thompson Regina-Sask. General Sales Agents." Cover is a mixture of green and white, with red writing on the white background and white writing on the green background. Cover contains a red and black ink drawing of two sheaves of wheat on either side of a roll of binder twine. Back cover contains an advertisement for the company’s new Lattice Cover. Contains the same logo as is found on the front. Inside contains multiple blank graph pages for writing, along with advertisements, useful information such as weight conversions and standard bushels, as well as a 1939-1940 calendar. Owner has put in several personal notes onto the pages.

Booklet titled "Money Maker Feeds and Concentrates for Poultry, Hogs, Cattle, and Horses" and containing an explanation of the development of a new United Grain Growers (U.G.G.) Feed Manufacturing Plant in Alberta, in particular the benefits of “Money maker feeds.” Content includes a projection of Canada’s farm production objectives, information on animal nutrition, and a guideline of good feeding practices. Booklet includes various black/white photograph reproductions, as well as a memoranda section that has been scribbled on.

PE000851 - United Grain Growers Notebook

Booklet containing a detailed account of the United Grain Growers, including shareholder information, stock and farm supplies, information on other agricultural agencies, record forms, grain assessment, examples of grain bills, and other factors surrounding the company. It also includes calendars and memoranda where the book owner can make notes, as well as space for addresses. The owner of this booklet made a fair number of notes throughout the latter sections, primarily for grocery lists, addresses, and recipes.

PE000811 - Notice to Vacate Shared Accommodation.

Single sheet notice to vacate shared accommodation. The tenant is Miss Regine LeBlanc and the request to vacate by the landlord is the desire of the “accommodation as an enlargement of his/her personal residence.” Notice by the Wartime Prices and Trade Board Rentals Administration.

PE000780 - Letter and Bulletin from the International Record Collector’s Club to Mr. Abbott. 

Bulletin #100 of the International Record Collector’s Club to Mr. W.J. Abbott at 81 Laurier Av. West, Ottawa, Canada.  This is a two page, typewritten brochure with illustrations of renowned opera figures. It has been folded in a triptych to fit in the 9.6 x 16.5 cm envelope. The envelope includes a three cent U.S. postage and a stamp with the date, time, and location (Dec.3, 1940, 9:30PM, Bridgeport, Conn.). Enclosed is also a typewritten note from the club’s founder to the recipient (dated Dec 2nd), which acknowledges the latter’s partial payment towards two records, as well as an expression of concern over Canada’s ban on “luxuries,” and its impact on the club’s Canadian audience. 

PE000728 - Collection of documents pertaining to the lease of farm land in Rathwell, Manitoba to Alice and Olga Bell

A collection containing approximately 40 items, all in good condition, pertaining to the lease of farm land from the Hudson’s Bay Company in Rathwell, Manitoba to Alice and Olga Bell, daughters of Canadian geologist Robert Bell.  Includes a letter from Agnes Bell to her mother in Montreal, dated at Sault Ste. Marie, July 24, 1875, as well as a printed Hudson’s Bay Company document entitled “Grazing Lease, Manitoba” from 1927.  

PE000674 - Papers in establishing the Red Cross Memorial Hospital in Arborg, Manitoba

Binder containing the correspondence and notes of Mrs. E. L. (Andrea) Johnson relating to the establishment of the Red Cross Memorial Hospital in Arborg, Manitoba. Mrs. Johnson was the Chairman of the Community Hospital Committee and the hospital was opened in January 1950. The contents of the binder include:

  • Typed letters about funding, planning and decorating the hospital and its grounds;
  • Receipts;
  • Inspection reports;
  • Handwritten notes on loose leaf papers and in a small lined notebook published by Manitoba Pool Elevators;
  • Pamphlets advertising for Trilene and other commodities;
  • Pamphlet explaining how to run a charity street fair, published by the Country Gentlewoman League, 1949;
  • Statistical report of the hospital as of Dec 31, 1953;
  • List of hospital expenditures in 1953;
  • Province of Manitoba septic tank construction standards and plans;
  • Report of the Women’s Work Committee for 1948;
  • Building contract bids.

PE000453 - “Western Canada. The Western Dominion Collieries, Limited, Debenture Issue. Prospectus.”

Four page (one folded sheet printed on both sides) document titled “Western Canada. The Western Dominion Collieries, Limited, Debenture Issue. Prospectus.” Dated, May 25, 1906. The company’s memorandum of association is printed on the final page. Document is accompanied by a one page blank application form requesting the purchase of debentures from the Western Dominion Collieries.

Part of the documents relating to the development of Western Dominion Collieries Limited, specifically the expansion of coal production near Estevan, Saskatchewan.

Four (4) page (one folded sheet printed on both sides) report titled “Report of Mr. Frank B. Smith, B. Sc., M.E. on the Property and Plant of the Souris Coal Mining Co., Ltd., Coalfields, Sask.” Smith describes and values the coal mining operation. Dated, April 10th, 1906. Edmonton, Alberta.

Part of the documents relating to the development of Western Dominion Collieries Limited, specifically the expansion of coal production near Estevan, Saskatchewan. See also PE000451 and PE000453.

PE000451 - Letter from President of Souris Coal Mining Co. to the Directors of the Anglo-Canadian Finance Co., Ltd.

Typed letter from R. R. Taylor, President and Manager of the Souris Coal Mining Company, to the Directors of the Anglo-Canadian Finance Company, Ltd. Taylor describes “the advantages enjoyed” by the company and expresses confidence that the £20 000 loan issued to the company will greatly increase its profits. Letter is dated April 27th, 1906.

Part of the documents relating to the development of Western Dominion Collieries Limited, specifically the expansion of coal production near Estevan, Saskatchewan. See also PE000452 and PE000453.

PE000227 - Letters from Thomas Smith of Waldenheim, SK to the Corry Hide & Fur Company

Two handwritten letters from Thomas Smith of Waldenheim, Saskatchewan addressed to the Corry Hide & Fur Company of Corry, Pennsylvania. The first letter dated Dec. 19th, 1912 details Mr. Smith’s shipment of 122 pelts to the Corry Hide & Fur Company, requesting a valuation to be returned by mail. The second letter, dated Jan 2th[sic], details Mr. Smith’s receipt of a cheque from the Corry Hide & Fur Co., and his request for the return of his furs. Waldenheim, Saskatchewan.

PE000972 - Poster titled: "Labor was there on 'D' day."
