1.3.1. Reference Material for Memoirs

When SBS began working on his memoir: "Forty Years in Canada", he contacted friends and individuals who had shared experiences with him, and asked for their diaries, recollections, etc. as background research material for his book. From this request, Sam received the eleven diaries of his friend and fellow NWMP officer Alexander R. Macdonnell (married to Marie's Aunt Min); as well as the two 1870 journals/diaries kept by fellow Ontario Rifle military men, Griffith Wainwright and D.H. Macmillan, who were with Sam on the 1870 trek to Manitoba to deal with the first Louis Riel uprising. Two hand-drawn and annotated maps were tucked into the diary kept by Major Wainwright and are included here.

2.2.1 Correspondence

The correspondence in the 1901-1904 files contains many hand-written letters and while these are SAC-related, many touch on personal matters. By 1905, much of the correspondence is type-written.

2.2.3 Reports

This series consists of hand-written diary reports, completed by Field Officers (Captains and Lieutenants), and sent daily to Sam Steele, Divisional Commander. The reports are not standardized, and take the form of correspondence, reporting on arrests, court cases and trials, regulations, troop movement, welfare of men, condition of horses, stock thefts, parades, cultural activities, riding drills, lectures, and general policing matters, etc. Some reports are written on two to three pages, while others might contain a single paragraph. Most diary reports are stamped with the official SAC Commanding B Division date stamp.
