The William Pearce Fonds consists of records documenting the three phases of his professional life: federal surveyor and administrator (1874-1884); federal advisor for western development policy (1884-1904); and western consultant for the Canadian Pacific Railway (post-1904). Most of the records in the Pearce fonds were created in the region that was the focus of his career: the territory fomerly known as Rupert's Land and the North-West Territory, later to become the prairie provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. A small portion of the records document Pearce's activites during his retirment

Photograph depicts a view of a mine opening just south of Stair Station of the Canadian Pacific Railway on the south bank of the Saskatchewan River. This mine commenced to ship coal in September 1883. The output was shipped to Winnipeg, but proved a loss owing to deterioration in quality.

This venture proved a loss due to poor quality. Pearce acquired this photograph to illustrate his "Historical Narrative" of development of the Canadian West. He collected photos as he wrote his narrative between 1917 and 1928.

Derrick and engine for prospecting for oil under the direction and at the expense of the Geological Survey. Drilling stopped when it reached the tar sands. The men in the photo were Land Department employees. The Land Department was located on the first story and the surveyor's offices were on the second story. The stack of bricks in the foreground served as a vault.

The building at the left with the porch is the City Hall of Winnipeg. The view is looking North. This building had to be torn down owing to weakening of its foundations. The City decided it could fill in the coulee where the bridge stood, but unfortunately did not leave an aperture of sufficient size to allow the necessary discharge of water during the very wet season of June 1877."
