      History

      Dr. Hubert (“Hu”) Harries, Economist and Politician, was born in Strathmore, Alberta on December 8, 1921. He received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Alberta (U of A) in 1945. He then earned his Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto and a Phd in Economics from Iowa State University. His academic research was focused in the area of oil industry and transportation.

      Between 1958 and 1960, Dr. Harries took the position of the Director of the School of Commerce in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the U of A. In 1960, he was promoted to the first Dean of the new Faculty of Commerce at the U of A. He served the position for eight years till 1968. In the meantime, Dr. Harries owned and operated his own economic consultants firm, Hu Harries and Associates Ltd.

      Dr. Harries entered politics as an Alderman on the Edmonton City Council from 1953 to 1959. In 1968, he was elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament from Edmonton-Strathcona in the federal election. In his one term in Ottawa, he made a name for himself by refusing a pay raise, and for advocating the legalization of marijuana. After his term in the House of Commons, he returned to the U of A in a part-time capacity. At the same time, he was a board member of Fletcher’s Fine Foods but was ousted as chairman in 1986.

      He married Joyce Harries (nee Farrell) on August 7, 1948, who was born in Edmonton in 1928. They had five children; Lori, Jody, Bruce, Jeff, and Dan. Dr. Harries operated a vineyard, 3 ranches in Alberta and British Columbia where he raised pure-bred black angus cattle. Hu was a fine horse-man and competed in many rodeos with his horse Docs Twister. In 1986, Hu died suddenly while participating in a cutting horse competition at Langley, B.C. on August 26, 1986.

      The University of Alberta School of Business holds the Dr. Hu Harries Medal in Business in his name’s honor to award annually to the convocating student in the School of Business who has obtained the highest academic standing in the courses of the final two years of the BCom Program.
