Custodial history

Scope and content

This archival collection is composed of textual and graphic materials related to the Hudson's Bay Company, the fur trade in Canada, and early European settlement in Canada. The collection includes correspondence between high-ranking employees at Hudson's Bay Company fur trade posts, personal correspondence between settlers or Hudson's Bay Company employees and their families, and Hudson's Bay Company reports, proclamations, contracts, and others records. The involvement of Indigenous peoples in the Canadian fur trade is also described throughout this collection. With a few exceptions, most items within the collection were created during the early- to mid-1800s.

Immediate source of acquisition

Bruce Peel Special Collections purchased this collection from Aquila Books in December 2016. Before this, the composite materials of this collection originally belonged to Dr. Donald Thompson, a private collector who sold these and other materials to Aquila Books in 2005.

Arrangement

Records arrived at Bruce Peel Special Collections arranged into topical categories imposed by the previous custodian. Chronological order has been imposed on the collection to arrange items into series. Each series contains items created within a ten year time span, with the exception of two series: Pre 1700s and 1700—1749.

The items in this collection came to Bruce Peel Special Collections arranged into individual sleeves, each with its own number. These numbers correspond with descriptions created by the previous custodian and which are arranged in a binder. In some instances, an item's description is accompanied by a typed or handwritten transcript. The numbers assigned by the previous custodian have been included in a note for each item. Researchers can use these numbers to access applicable notes and transcripts in the binder. The plastic sleeves in which items were previously contained are now arranged so that each sleeve follows its respective item.
