Physical condition

The condition of copies in the Lund Comics Collection varies. Most items show relatively minor wear at worst and are without significant defect. Some older publications, however, have suffered more severe damage. Tearing and other wear to covers is quite common. Commentary on the condition of individual copies will be offered only when the item has some unusual attributes or is in a particularly fragile state.

General note

The Lund Comics Collection holds a range of comic books and other cartoon material containing depictions of R.C.M.P. officers and other references to the organization. The Collection also contains a variety of reference materials related to comics and their collecting. The material held within the Lund Comics Collection is separated into three subseries:
a) Books about comics
b) Comics with R.C.M.P. officers in featured roles
c) Miscellaneous comics

General note

Comic books, like all art forms, can reveal much about the period in which they were created, and this is certainly true of the magazines in the Lund Comics Collection. These stories frequently show R.C.M.P. officers in contact with Native people and other non-Anglo-Canadian individuals. Depictions of such characters often reflect the racial and ethnic stereotypes prevalent in the popular culture of the day. Although not all such instances will be noted in the finding aid, particularly extreme manifestations will be commented upon in the notes.
