General note

On cover: "The national magazine for young Canadians."

General note

Holdings: vol. 3, no. 4 (March 1944)

General note

Among one of several stories in vol. 3, no. 4 is "The R.C.M.P.: The case of Ephraim and Peter." R.C.M.P. officers investigate the December 1934 robbery of an Ashern, Manitoba, bank.

General note

Educational Projects, as its name implied, sought to present more serious content than some of its Canadian competitors. The publisher tended to focus "on more wholesome and edifying fare like profiles of Canadian prime ministers and governors general, historical pieces, and R.C.M.P. cases." (John Bell, "A history: English Canadian comic books" in John Bell, ed., Canuck Comics, Montreal: Matrix Books, c1986).

General note

One of the works produced by Educational Projects was the anthology Action stories of the Mounties. The Lund Comics Collection holds a copy of this publication, and it is described separately in the finding aid. Action stories of the Mounties also contains the story "The case of Ephraim and Peter."

General note

The appearance of Canadian heroes - and other works issued by Educational Projects - marked a significant milestone in the evolution of a Canadian comics industry. The development of Canadian comics had traditionally been inhibited by the domination of American products in the domestic marketplace. During the Second World War, this dynamic changed. The war effort placed pressure on the government to address the growing trade imbalance with the United States, and, in December 1940, restrictions were placed on the importation of non-essential American goods. Among the banned items were comic books, and Educational Projects - as well as several other companies - came forward to fill the void. (Information taken from John Bell, "A history: English Canadian comic books.")

General note

These competitors included Anglo-American Publishing Company and Bell Features and Publishing Company. The Lund Comics Collection holds issues of several of their publications - Three aces comics, Robin Hood comics, Active comics, Comic crimes, and Crimefighters comics - and they are described separately in the finding aid.
