        History

        Dr. John Edward (Brad) Bradley was born on October 21, 1917 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Bradley completed his MD at the University of Alberta (U of A) in 1940. He worked as a family physician in Wainwright, Alberta before becoming the first Executive Director of the Glenrose Provincial Hospital. Bradley was also Chair of the Alberta Hospital Commission. Bradley was a co-founder of the Wainwright Medical Clinic in Alberta. During the Second World War, Bradley served in the Medical Branch of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

        In 1977, he was made a Special Advisor on Medical Research and worked to create the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.

        Bradley was the Chair of the Board of Governors at the U of A from 1966 to 1972. He later became Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Governors at the U of A.

        Bradley received several awards throughout his life. The U of A also awarded him Honorary LLD in 1972 and the Alumni Award of Excellence in 2003. In 2001 he was the first Alberta physician inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and made an Honourary Life Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

        He was also a President of the Alberta Curling Association, the Royal Glenora Club and the Mayfair Golf Club. Bradley was a devout Anglican throughout his life.

        Bradley was married to Lola and had three children; Bill, Ann, and David. Bradley passed away on March 22, 2004 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 86. In his honour the U of A offers the Dr John E Bradley Scholarship which is awarded to students with superior academic achievement enrolled in the first or second year of studies in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.
