      History

The Alberta Centre for Well-Being (ACFWB) was founded in 1989 by Drs. Art Quinney and Gerry Glassford from the University of Alberta and Alfred Nikolai and Dr. Steve West from the Government of Alberta. It was part of the University of Alberta Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. The Centre was designed to enhance the well-being of Albertans through education for health and well-being professionals, leadership opportunities, collaborative approaches to research and practice, and a community focus.

The Centre created fact sheets, infographics, and other resources to help professionals encourage physical activity and well-being. They also published the Alberta Survey of Physical Activity and other reports about physical activity in Alberta. Some of the initiatives created by the Centre include Wellness Wagon, Health in Action, Physical Activity @ Work, Rural Route to Active Aging, and the Alberta Workplace Audit Toolkit.

In 2001, the ACFWB became the Alberta Centre for Active Living (ACAL) and later just the Centre for Active Living (CAL), reflecting a shift in focus towards physical activity. On 20 June 2021, the Centre was closed by the Faculty due to budget cuts.
